One good thing that happened at work today...

We see so much negativity about nursing (which we all know is often warranted) and many venting threads (which thank God we have someplace safe to vent our frustrations), that I would love to hear about one good thing that happened on your shift today. Even if it was the ONLY good thing that happened all day, LOL! Think hard and let's see how long we can keep it going!

I'll start. I'm a school nurse, and today is the last school day before our two week Winter Break. Besides the obvious benefit, this means lots of hugs today, which are always appreciated! :icon_hug:

I had many good things at work this past week. My favorite is the following:

A patient's family tearfully giving me a hug on their last day of admission, thanking me for being a bright spot in their stay, for taking great care of their mom, and for helping them cope and plan for the stress of medications and care on a small budget.

I'm just studying at the moment so i'm not technically a nurse yet, and so haven't seen the bad yet as such but I have started my work experience this week in a nursing home and have found lots of positives.

In the few days i've been working there i've had so many laughs with the residents and heard so many interesting stories. Although some are more lucid than others, of course, even the least lucid of them are fun to speak with if you just give them some time. I've also got my first taste of the simple sense of fulfillment that you get when you know that you've managed to make someones day that bit better than it might have been otherwise. Like I said i'm only at the start of my nursing career but right now i'm feeling positive and excited about my choice to try nursing on for size!

Last week a patient walked into the ICU, still trach'ed but going home. He came by to thank everyone. He had been in and out of the ICU for 8 months, near death so many times . . . We had lost track of him as it had been months since his last ICU admit. Miracles DO happen!!

An expressive aphasic pt who just answered yes/no to neuro ck questions (even open-ended...) said "You're a good nurse" spontaneously at 0400's ck!! WOW!! Grammie, the RN was comin' through, I think.

Just had another one...got a heartfelt written thank you from my principal. Now I have written evidence that my efforts do not go unnoticed, even if appreciation is not often expressed!

I have the day off and I babysat my beautiful, sweet, adorable, gorgeous 4-month-old niece. She was so much fun and so EASYYYYY!

I had a patient I had been caring for a couple of night... the first night I wasn't getting much of a response from him except when turning (80+, cancer mets, continuous morphine drip with phenergan topper q 6). The second night he was more coherent, and I offered him a drink. I said you can have whatever you want...soda, coffee, juice...just name it.

"Cold beer?"

brought a smile to my face, and I passed it on the day shift. Hopefully they passed it on to the family. :)

A residents family memeber told me "putting mom in the nursing home was the best decision we ever made, and were so blessed that she has a nurse like you caring for her" family memeber also said "mom's never looked better i can tell what good care you all give her"....this made my day because i work in ltc and its extremly frustrating some days, but when family memebers recongize the care and dedication we give to the residents, it always makes me feel good and proud :)
