Is there any male nurses reading this? I'd love to hear your experiences that are unique to male nurses. Also if any ladies have any comments on their expieriences of working with a male nurse I'd love to hear then.

Do any of you guy's hear this like I do " Your gonna be a male nurse like on Meet The Parents"? I here that all the time from people I meet. I get a little upset at the stigme that Male nurses have with some people. But I try to change peoples mind for the better by being as caring and compassionate as I can.

its always AWESOME to be working with a fella for the day!

I haven't had much of a problem being a male nurse. As an agency nurse, I sometimes lose home health cases because they prefer female nurses. Other than that, nothing I can recall over 16 years. Sometimes, being a male nurse, in an LTC has advantages, such as working with a unruly female patient. A little "flirting"...LOL...can work wonders. Cnas and other nurses appreciate the help in lifting heavy patients. Oh, yes...one other problem(?). There are times when, no matter how many times you correct them, some patients insist on calling me "doctor". Oh, well....

So these people think you must be doctor because you are male?

Do they think female doctors are nurses?:chuckle

Our little hospital has four male nurses. One of them is a jerk and no matter what we do he is always asking, "If I were female, would you have _____?" Sigh. The other three are WONDERFUL. Men don't get PMS, they don't do all of the back stabbing, whining, and general *itching that women (myself included) are often guilty of. The one that does charge is the BEST RN I have ever known. He knows his stuff and knows it very well. He also doesn't get emotional during crisis situations and will take suggestions and criticism better than anyone I know. He would be a great manager but if he ever left the floor we would kill him becasue he's just too good at what he does!!!

2 great male RN's two fault finding, lazy, whining slightly unbalanced male RN's (one who is the most gossipy, whiny, self absorbed jerk). As for male nurses-----bring them on. I truly believe that nursing will be viewed more as a respected profession when we get more male nurses. And as for the lack of respect that you are getting when you tell people you are becoming a nurse- the females get it to. It just comes with the job.

Male nursing teaches you that prejudice works both ways. You will find people who hate the fact that you are a male nurse, then you will find those that love the fact. I think generally that the good make up for the bad. Please keep an open mind. You will learn about prejudice.

I failed a test in the second nursing school I attended. The director of the school was an old ex nun, a real witch. She told me to meet with the instructor to get some help since you were allowed two re-writes. The instructor closed his door and preceded to cover the whole test and nothing but the whole test. She had told him what to do.

The third nursing school I went to during the very last clinical session. The second half I got an instructor who had it out for me. I think maybe because I am a male. Anyway, the first half instructor a leader in the school defended me. The year after the second half instructor failed one of my buddies. Its difficult to label this as prejudice but I am suspicious.

Anyway these are some of my experiences beyond the little old lady in the bathroom asking for a nurse. "I mean real nurse ". I did receive a positive write up from a little old lady in Ft Worth telling the administration that even though Kevin is a man he did a bang up job. I still have the letter.

Good luck!

I work in the Emergency room and I have to say.... I LOVE WORKING WITH THE GUY RN'S Less drama to deal with.......

I feel about male nurses the same way I feel about female nurses..depends on how good a nurse they are.

I've never had a problem or anything negative to say about nurses who are men. I treat them the same way as any other nurse. If they are a good nurse, I respect them. If they are not a good nurse, I withhold my respect from them. Plain and simple. :nurse:
