Specializes in Hey I'm now an RN!!.

ok, have any of you experienced this??

i was walking by a room last night, where a student nurse was tending to her patient. i overheard the family (that had just come in) say, "so what do you do?"

the student replied, i am a nursing student helping to take care of your dad tonight.

they all giggled. one said, so your pretending huh??

she said no, i am learning.

:angryfirethey all kept laughing. except the patient & the student.

but they kept on with the comments and belittling statements, so i walked by and said hey mr. so&so, how are you tonight? i didn't get a chance to say hello yet.

they all smiled and replied. i said "wow, your a lucky guy tonight! you have one of the star students taking care of you!" he smiled and said how good she was to him.

poor thing, thanked me later was a little teary but insisted she was ok. :sniff:

have any of you been in a situation like that before??

how did you address it??

the mokery was relentless, i had no advice because i just couldn't believe it. i had never experienced that before.

not to mention my rn clinicals start soon...what if i have a run in like that?? how do i handle it??:innerconf i am a pretty tolerant person...but straight forward. have never really been at a loss for words before!!:smackingf

During my time as a student nurse in the UK I and my fellow students never came across anything like this. The visitors were rude and ignorant. You handled the situation perfectly and hopefully this is the first and last time you will come across this.

So when a surgical resident comes in to get a preop consent, do you think that they will refer to him as a "pretend" surgeon???????????

Yeah, right

Specializes in cardiac/critical care/ informatics.

That was rude but maybe making a joke, was thier way of coping. Unfortunately the longer i am a nurse, the ruder and nastier patients families are getting.

No, they sure wouldn't! I bet money I don't have they were also rude and dismissive of the nurses.

This is just one example of how uninformed the public is of nursing education and the importance of the profession.

I couldn't agree more, the pts and relatives are just getting ruder and ruder.

I was in a meeting 2 weeks ago with a pt and his wife, the patient got verbally and physically violent even threw a glass at me. I was so shocked I said and did nothing. Now they want me to aplologise and take 50% of the blame, just cant get my head round that at all. :uhoh21:

Couldn't agree more. You did a superb job for both the family (who DIDN'T deserve it), and the student, who certainly DID. That was quick thinking, and I applaud you for it ! :balloons:

This is beyond ridiculous... I can hardly believe how IGNORANT these ppl were !!! :angryfire

And the comment about the resident being the "pretend surgeon" certainly applies, doesn't it?

hmmm... I think had it been me, I might have offered that comment.

"your pretend cardiologist/surgeon/doctor (whatever applies) will be making his/her pretend rounds shortly... you can ask him/her all the questions you want." :stone :stone :stone

You did a marvelous job handling some first class rudeness and ignorance.

Actually, when I was in the hospital, I didn't mind having a student nurse at all. They were the ones who actually had the time to explain things to me, they took their time in their assessments, and they were EXTREMELY thorough when making discharge summaries.

I'm sorry that you had to go through this, but you handled it well. Great job! :)

I have had just the opposite happen....I have told a patient's family that I'm "just a nursing student" and they come back with "you are NOT JUST anything. Being a nursing student is just as important".

i have never experienced family treating me like this as a student, nor have i witnessed this as a nurse with students on the floor. most people you encounter do know how to behave appropriately.

most of us don't mind being teased or joked with, but when someones feelings have been hurt, the line has been crossed.

i think the student responded beautifully with "no, i am learning." :yeah: :yeah: :yeah: most people would have stopped the jibbing after a remark like that. the odd few just don't know when to quit.

i also applaud the nurse for her supportive statement towards the family in regards to the student. :yeah: :yeah: :yeah:

Specializes in SNF-LTC; Gero-psych.

I will agree with everything I have Read thus far... You handled the situation superbly... When i was a student i never experienced this.. However if i would have been in that students situation.. I would have probably been upset.. and asked the family to step out if they were going to carry on in that manor..

As the nurse I would have tried to act in a similar was as your self.. YOU DID GREAT....
