Nurses what do you expect from your Cna's?

Having been a CNA for five years before becoming an RN, I can say that I expect caring compassion. For those hours when we are at work, we must put the patients' needs ahead of our own. Even when personal life and all the drama that comes from working with other nurses and cnas is all we can think about, we must put our patients needs first. Oh and being on time doesnt hurt either!

To do their job without reminders. "Did pt 204 get turned?' "Is her alarm on?" Doing the same reminders night after night gets a bit tiring.

Must have a heart, I can teach everything else.

Sheesh, I would settle for not getting the evil eye when I ask for a task to be done.

The CNA's at my facility, hide out, ignore lights and practically snarl at you when you need something.

Maybe get up off of the chair.

I'd expect them to do their job without having to be reminded time after time. Despite what some may believe, we do NOT have the same job. I don't expect to do her/his job, just as she is not expected to do mine! Even more importantly, I expect that we will work as a team! If she needs my help I hope she feels comfortable asking and vice versa!

Oh and I hope she/he doesn't "keep track" of the call bells. You know, "I got that last one now it's your turn!" I answer call bells all the time but if I'm in the middle of listening to lungs sounds or drawing up meds I won't drop what I'm doing to answer one. I actually had a pt "circling the drain" one day and it took almost until lunch time to work out the pt's troubles and send them off to the OR. One of our CNA's walks up to me as she is going to her lunch break and says, "Oh and by the way, I left the washes in room 306 for you since you did nothing all morning!" My jaw almost dropped to the floor. Does it really matter if people get washed at 9am or 2pm?

Now after that rant, I have worked with some awesome CNA's that are caring and hard working (especially in the ER). We have had great shifts filled with laughs, smiles and lots of hard work! Team work is the key!

When I'm charge nurse, I absolutely HATE having to tell CNAs the same thing over and over again, and having to double check their work. I always say to them come get me if you need me or have any problems. I remember an old nurse I worked with years ago saying: Be firm but be fair. And I hate it when they do not do what they are asked to do!

Yes! I rememeber a CNA saying 'What is so hard about being a RN? all they do apart from us is give blood and narcotics!' I felt like saying, God you are SO ignorant. Try being in charge - it's hard work!

And yes management is a big part of our job. No-one wants to be the big manager though who makes the decisions and has to tell non-compliant and lazy staff what to do.

Just try it for one busy shift and see how all you CNAs go!

I have to say the CNAs I have worked with could be a little more organised and a bit more compassionate.

It's a late post but I sure have to rant today...

I am a nurse manager who had the job of firing a nurse recently who was completely justified in being let go. However she was SO lax on all the CNAs that they all thought they were running the show and have made serious errors as a result.

New day- I am here- ALL the employees are hostile.

I was a CNA for almost 10 years but I went to school and I have a BSN I earned- I am NOT letting a bunch of immature vindictive CNAs threaten my license. I actually had a CNA sit in my office and tell me that all the problems in our place is due to "management" and stated that if I got out from behind my desk, etc, etc. This place hired me because of this staff issue when they came pretty close to being shut- we are ok now. I informed this CNA that when I am on the phone with a State Investigator or apologizing to family for the 100th time that day, I do not have time to deal with the petty high-school crap they continue to bring to me instead of doing their job. :mad:

Back in the day, I do not remember ever seeing the DNS or administration out on the floor sucking up to staff and trying to be buddies with them and that was the way it was.

I started out as a new nurse thinking how I was going to right all of the wrongs and boy am I burnt.

I really don't want to get rid of most of staff but they are doing things behind my back, posting hateful things on facebook WHILE AT WORK, and generally being the most lazy bunch of immature people I have ever met. I am in total shock at what these people think they can continue getting away with! I don't ever remember having that type of attitude when I was a CNA; I recognized the heirarchy of staff.

Oh, and I read the posts where the CNAs are telling nurses to do CNA jobs? Yeah, my best friend who is a nurse in LTC finally told a couple of CNAs from her facility "when you can do MY job then I might do yours." I thought that was well said.
