Struggles with finding a nursing job....

Nurses New Nurse

Published

A nursing degree today is a total waste. You will not get hired due to a lack of new grad programs, oversaturation of new grad RNs and an influx of forgein RNs. You will end up unemployed and in debt without any skills that you can use in any other market. Look it up. google "RN New Grads unemployed". NOBODY WILL HIRE NEW GRADS. The scant new grad opportunities that exist see HUNDREDS if applicants for 10-20 positions. Do not waste your money..........do something else----------the RN ship has sailed----it is over.

Thanks but I will continue to pursue my degree. I want to have a job that I actually enjoy doing and not just something that will pay the bills. If I can't get hired then I will just use that opportunity to get a higher degree.

I got a job before graduation, in a specialty department. I got laid off and had another job within 5 weeks in another specialty department. I graduated with honors, did extra preceptorships, had extra certifications, and presented myself well in interview. New grads ARE getting jobs, they just are not as readily available to any old new grad out there. I have to drive almost an hour to work one way. Some people have to re-locate all together, just as many other people with other degrees. Part of the problem is that many people went into nursing with an attitude of entitlement. I am guessing you were on the those people.

OP, nursing will be a second career for me. I have a B.A. in Information Technology & Informatics, so yeah, I'll be marketable outside of the nursing field. However, despite the points you make, I'm still pursing nursing and have every right too.

Working in a non-nursing field, my team consisted of foreigners from India. They were apart of projects I was in charge of. So like many have stated, many careers (not only nursing) outsource or rely on foreign workers.

And I haven't seen any posts that would conclude that people are living in a fantasy world and going to live "happily ever after" when they receive their RN. I've seen valid goals people are going after.

You're obviously frustrated with your situation and want to discourage others. Do you feel better?

I don't think anyone is saying it will be easy and no one on here is living in a fantasy. Just because we are optimistic, doesn't make it a fantasy. No one on here is saying we will land jobs before we graduate and make tons of money.

Happiness is a choice. I'm a poor, unemployed student and I'm happy. I'm in over my head in debt (credit card) and will be filing bankruptcy soon and I'm happy. And I will choose to be happy even if I do not land my dream job right after school. Because happiness is a choice I make every day.

The economy fluctuates and it always turns around. It will not be like this forever. That's basic economics. Maybe while your waiting for a job to land in your lap you can take an economics course.

Can we not be so narrow minded and think it's only affecting new grad nurses? Come on, do you not watch or read the news? Do you think the 13 million unemployed are nurses?

:yelclap: well stated happy2learn. LOL!!

Ok, one less person added to the hiring pool. That works for me

....are in debt with no marketable job skills outside of nursing.

One of your old posts indicates you were an electrician and gave up a great job for nursing. That sounds like a pretty good marketable job skill. Do what you need to do until you can land a nursing job.

I have a lot of older friends that just graduated college guess what? they all dont have jobs. I think i have a better chance at getting a job as a nurse than being lets say a sociology major. I know some nurses who have gotten internships/externships during summer and got a job there after they graduated. So you never know. We just have to wait out this bad economy and eventually it will get better.

haha. i graduated w/ a Sociology degree 2 years ago. here i am... back in school getting my BSN :|..

the economy blows...period.

but like someone mentioned before there will ALWAYS be sick people. so, its not a job thats going to be "outsourced" or replaced by computers..i think we'll be pretty safe once things pick back up.

Graduated in May, took Nclex June 19, received pass/temp license june 27th, put in for a OR nurse position July 1st, called from HR headquarters over phone interview July 2nd, Interview with 2 OR managers and HR at the hospital June 13th, and have my Peer interview July 21st. Also have another jobs lined up if this one falls through (which I am pretty sure I have it). Point, there are jobs out there, you just have to be persistent and aggressive while looking. Job market will get better, until then Happy hunting is working for me.

Oh yeah and the Hiring manager told me that they are looking to hire asap because they have a lot of positions to fill in this department.

New Grads are being hired where I live. There are SO many different areas you could work, are you sure you aren't being too picky? I personally know 2 nurse managers who are always talking about needing nurses (same day surgery and home health). I know for a fact, they hire new grads because they are both always excited this time of year, so they can try and get their hands on the new grads before other departments and hospitals get to them.

Not where I live. All 78 BSN's who graduated this past May have jobs and are working. Places have already tried snagging us juniors as well. I have no doubt I will have a job even before I graduate as will my fellow classmates.
