Topic of the Day: GO AWAY FOREIGN NURSES!

World Immigration

Published

This is exactly how I feel each time I log into the International Forum. I don't feel welcome as a foreign born nurse. I don't feel respected as a minority in this country. All I feel is the hatred and insults thrown at us simply because we are not Americans.

So let's talk about it, since threads were locked and posts were deleted because they were "out of the topic" hence we could not freely express and justify how we feel about the criticisms on foreign born and/or foreign trained nurses. Each and every time I read something that "put down" certain minorities, it makes me feel sick to my stomach. Being discriminated all my life, I truly understand how other foreign nurses, especially the Filipino nurses, feel. No, you simply won't understand if you were not in our shoes.

Every one has his/her point of view on certain issues, but attacking, criticizing and (worst) making generalizations of other races, cultures and beliefs is just not right, insensitive and ethnocentric. Yes, we are immigrants, but you don't have to yell it to our face. The US would not have prosper if not for the immigrants. Don't forget your family or ancestors were once immigrants as well, unless you are Native Americans. So you have no rights to ask us get out if we are legally here, unless this is your native land. Remember, America is the land of opportunity that were built through slavery from Africa and Asia.

I wonder sometimes, how could you be a professional nurse if you are culturally insensitive? How could you offer the best care if all you think is your own self and your own beliefs, and disregard other culture and belief systems? I see nurses here with 30 plus years of experience do not practice the basic fundamental of nursing. Maybe they should go back to square one and learn it from Potter and Perry.

This IS an International forum. This forum is for every one regardless of age, gender, color, etc. If you say something culturally insensitive in other forum, maybe we will think that you are just plain stupid or has never been out of the country. But, if you are persistently saying something that insult and disgrace other cultures, races, nationality and etc, I think something should be done by the moderators...unless the moderators themselves are not sensitive enough on this issue as well.

Well, Merry Christmas everyone (no, I'm not Christian...but I know many are here) and thank you for listening.

The situation has been going-on for months now. Sorry, but I find it hard that no member of the Staff don't know of this.

I would say longer than months, I would say years.

What I don't understand is why people say I looked back on some post and don't see it.

It not one certain post, it is the general tone of the Philippine and International Section.

It seems like a select few get kicks by trying to deflate peoples hopes or dreams.

I didn't notice it being Filipino Nurses per se, more like for all immigrant Nurses including me. I get deflated by the posts that give the other side of the story too, and I hate to say it but they are usually true and a little hard to swallow.

It's a bad situation for immigrants now, get a helmet.

Unfortunately some people are like that. However, if your plan IS to move to America I say you had better get used to it.

We have this thing called freedom of speech and some people use that freedom to the utmost degree.

You can't really just expect people to be quiet about their opinion. This IS America after all. When have you ever known America or Americans to keep their opinions to themselves?

It's OUR culture. If you plan to move here your gonna have to learn to deal with it.

Otherwise it's like me moving to Japan and complaining that they are all super formal and they shouldn't be. ;)

Basically, some people are deflating your dreams and hopes and wishes. As mean as that can be at times it's not a TOS violation (per the AN Staff) so I am failing to see what the issue is.

If you are going to live in America you are gonna have to have a thicker skin. That's for sure. :D

Well, there are rude people wherever you live. That doesn't mean one should have to get used to it. There is freedom of speech, and then there is manners. As my mum used to say "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything".

I agree, but some people are never taught manners.

You are right. There is a funny thing about manners though. Being rude is bad manners, insulting people is bad manners. POINTING OUT bad manners is bad manners as well. ;)

See, it is quite funny. Americans are blunt usually. That IS NOT rude. It is the custom for many of us. ;)

My Japanese friends consider us rude. I consider then unnecessarily formal. Who is right? Well that depends which country your are in doesn't it.

Plus free speech applies even to rude or unpopular speech and who is the guest to expect the host to change their customs?

Different cultures and traits are always there, this is why people who try and work in another country has to make some changes. This is what we call adapting. As they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do... Let's us not forget where we came from and the values that are taught to us by our parents and grandparents, i.e. to take care of our parents and love our children and many more....

FYI: redranger is an American. This why I said in a previous post that people who do not know the whole story and even know who is who just don't join in.

To complete things, ghillbert is from Australia, lost-stranger is from India, and a few others are from UK.

People in this thread are talking about the attitude of a few members in the site is displaying and consider offensive. This website, located in cyberspace is not "America". Freedom of Speech? Try to re-read the Terms of Service of the website regarding it: https://allnurses.com/terms-info.html Try reading the other parts of the TOS as well regarding being remaining polite at all times and not giving inappropriate generalizations.

There should be no single custom that should dominate in this website. Only the TOS.

Ahh, well the Admin already said 'There have been no TOS' violations...

They also said this IS an American website.

So what's the problem??? Why is everyone purposefully contradicting the Admins???

BTW - I was born in Cork, Ireland. The first quarter of my life was in Europe. Technically I am a foreigner ;)

Gotta love the huge assumptions everyone is making.

I don't think the fact that you moved to the US when you were 7 or 8 would lead to mis-assumptions. If I may draw your attention to a quote you made in a previous entry:

"This IS America after all. When have you ever known America or Americans to keep their opinions to themselves?

It's OUR culture. If you plan to move here your gonna have to learn to deal with it".

It is evident from your own words that you certainly consider yorself American as you us the word "OUR" in block capitals when talking about American culture.

Oh, I am American. I am also Irish. ;) The point is that one can not make assumptions about American. Many of us do come from other places.

Technically I AM a foreigner. ;)

My culture is American. What is American culture though? It is a mixture of 'foreign' cultures. :) Everything we think and do is directly influenced by cultures from OTHER countries. That is the assumption. That we are the same. That we have no 'contact' with other cultures. That we just don't get it. That we don't like other people. It's a mighty big assumption.

'OUR' also doesn't specify who that includes. My friend recently got his citizenship. He is American. Interestingly enough he is ALSO African. Interesting that.

ETA: Of course, if you were from Manchester I wouldn't have to explain... :D HEHEHEHE J/K
