Your favorite nursing gadget?

Published

What is your favorite nursing gadget (can be practical and necessary, like your stethoscope or nursing shoes, or just for fun).

I admit that I am a bit of a freak about office supplies in general, and nursing things in particular. I don't take much to work with me, but I am really particular about my favorites. For example, I love these EKG calipers. I have the green ones. I don't know why. It's not like they do magic tricks or anything. I just coveted them for a long time til I caved in and bought.

So what's your weird nursing gadget obsession?

I am very particular about my pens.

I only use the Pilot fine point retractables. I love my pens.

They are only available in limited places, and I am protective about handing them out.

My brother is the same way.

He is a med student who orders his pens online since they are an even harder to find item available only in Japan.

A nurse after my own heart. My Contour pens, highlighters and post its. If I don't have my Contour Pens, I lose my freaking mind...it is something about those pens that make me write even neater than normal. If they made them with Red ink, it would be even better, but ya can't have everything...:D

Specializes in Neuro, Cardiology, ICU, Med/Surg.

I like Zebra pens myself, though the most recent batch were a little blobby.

While not my favorite gadget, one I like to give honorable mention to is the Carpuject injector. Most of the nurses on my unit don't use them, but draw the contents out of Tubex as if they are any other kind of vial with a separate syringe. Once I discovered the joy and simplicity of using the Carpuject, I never turned back... especially when adminstering the 5,000 unit tubex of heparin. There is not a single drop of extra heparin in that tubex making it very difficult to draw the whole lot out, but slap the thing in my carpuject, push out the air, and I'm ready to go.:yeah:

my multicolor pen... I can keep track of things that need to be done on a time schedule vs basic pt info when I get report... all I have to do is quickly look over my paperwork and I can easily spot reminders for meds, labs, specimens, accuchecks, etc... I *heart* my multicolor pen... I feel lost without it. =)

I agree. I have some blue plastic ones (for PD tubing) and several metal sets (out of suture removal kits that weren't used).

Ha! We should do a thread of "How many uses have you found for a hemostat"?

The Hover mat. Everytime I use it, I wonder why I didn't come up with it.

Specializes in Management, Emergency, Psych, Med Surg.

My Omega Seamaster watch. It never stops working. Also I like my work shoes, black with wonderful multicolored accents, my collection of pens.

This thread is so much fun,I like many nursing gadgets but if I had to chose one it would definitely be a white nursing shoes and I also noticed that I'm starting to buy non-nursing shoes in color white (at least my last four pairs). I arleady bought my first set of scrubs,of course in white! My family is laughing at me.

Specializes in Hospice, Palliative Care, OB/GYN, Peds,.

Pens, and I am not really particular except a medium point ballpoint will do. I love the free ones that drug reps give out.:yeah:

Specializes in CCU,ICU,ER retired.

Curved hemostats they can do everything, screwdrivers, pliers, you name it. It is just like duct tape

Specializes in Cardiac, Acute/Subacute Rehab.

Transparent tape...not paper, not anything else...seems to pull out less hair.

And Sharpie pens....they're my most favorite pen ever! The ink is dark like a regular Sharpie, but it doesn't bleed through the paper. Now all they need is a RED Sharpie pen.
