some younger male nurses.....

Published

I can say I have nothing but love for the older male nurses (I mean over 30) that I work with. That said, the younger ones have got to be the most apathetic, jerky people I have ever had to deal with. They specifically work at night because they don't want to really deal with patients when they're actually awake. They specifically wear the light blue "MD-looking" scrubs so that they will be treated like doctors, and many times are--because they're men, and they've purposely dressed this way. The more mature men on my floor don't care what color scrubs they wear, and seem very helpful and kind and caring. Time and time again I witness a patient who is reluctant to ask anything "petty" of these guys (like fetching a glass of water or a snack, etc) but will think nothing of calling some random female nurse to come do it.

It' a disservice to any male nurse that really cares about his practice and isn't just "slumming it" because he couldn't get into med school. Nursing is not "slumming it" and if you have to pick a night shift to do your job because the thought of dealing with people when they're conscious is so irritating, rethink what you're doing and go into research.

the very same can be said about younger (under 30) female nurses, who come to work all dolled-up for the sole reason of trying to hook-up with a doc.

Again, while there may be cases where this can be said, I'm not so sure it needs to be, in a field where so many young women are people one can be proud to know. I think there are a lot of fathers in this world who would faint if they really knew some of the things their daughters do, and mothers who'd be amazed at the man the boy who wouldn't take out the trash has become.

We'd be doing ourselves and our profession a favor by being more ready to recognize that.

Er, what Leslie said...

Didn't you just graduate nursing school a month and a half ago? How long have you worked with these people? A couple of weeks?

I'm sure you're a joy to work with. Half the reason I enjoyed the night shift so much was I got to avoid catty judgementalism like this from my coworkers.

momma started it.

You can't argue with momma. Well, technically, I suppose you can, but you'll lose, because momma knows.

i am a young male nurse.. and i carry my own weight... even though everyone calls me a baby...

Hahah I know that feeling. I grew a bear cause I looked like I was 12 but now I am just the floor teddy bear. But I digress, honestly is all about attitude. Personally I am the antithesis of what you say. 8 mos in and already I'm surpassing where I should be per my annual review and I am never below getting a small something or going that extra mile for a patient. In my opinion its all about attitude, young or old, male or female, there will be people who treat it as a career (wanting to do the work/its a calling) and there will be people who treat it as a job (wanting to do it for the money).

Oh well thats my two cents... plus some bragging hah. Oh by the way I'm surprised patients still call me a doctor after i correct them and do my daily routine. I mean whens the last time a doctor got a patient a fresh water pitcher or helped them clean up/change their bed. I'm shocked when they know how to operate the beds :D but they are learning

I can only hope that the OP was trolling around...putting a post like that into the "male nursing" forum is pretty ignorant. What do you expect to gain from doing something like that?

Do you want us all to put up our hands, lay down our scopes and say "yup, you're so smart, you are the first person to uncover our little secret"? Give me a break. If you want to vent, do it to everyone, if you want to slander, go somewhere else...I'm not interested.

Now that I think about it...I guess I was interested or I wouldn't have read through 2 pages in order to say my two cents....stupid irony

"knock off this immature nonsense. you just don't go around judging an entire group of people because of a few, misguided notions. nurses come in all shapes, sizes, ages, genders. now, git out there and worry about yourself."

seriously good advice -- i hope the op "gets it."

If Momma ain't happy, ain't no one happy!

If Momma ain't happy, ain't no one happy!

i have that very saying, placed on the shelf above my stove.

boy, if there was ever a truth...

One of the units where I work has that sign posted on the door of the resident's conference room, only it says "If the nurses ain't happy..."

Pretty good advice to up and coming young doctors, I think.

LOL...our central supply just put on a skit during a weekly customer service meeting and their motto is exactly that "if Nursing isn't happy......no one is happy", because they've identified nursing as their 'customer". I don't know how I feel about the customer service movement, but I liked that idea. :yeah:
