Grossest Thing You've Ever Seen
I had a patient story similar to that except my guy had severe plaque psoriasis that he looked like an alligator so his dermatologist started him on a med, don't remember the name but it essentially stopped his keratin production. It took about a week to work but then just like that all of his giant pieces of plaque just started to fall off. We had to keep giving him red bio bags for his skin and clean his floor and bed at least three times a day cause there was dead skin flakes everywhere.

Grossest Thing You've Ever Seen
I'm a new nurse so I haven't seen a lot of gross stuff yet though I would love to. My mini story pales in comparison but i was taking care of an elderly lady with Dementia and unresponsive came to us with PNA. So I get her a couple days when I get close I notice that her breath is terrible and see little specks of sputum on the siderails so she must be bringing some of this up. So I get one of the ICU nurses that I know to send me some of the mouth care sponges that connect to suction and start on some good mouth care. I see this "little" piece starting to come loose so I daringly put my fingers in to pull it out and turns out her entire pallet was covered by mucus and it happens that my PCT comes in as the same time I am pulling this mucusy thing out of my ladys mouth kinda scared her good.

Can RNs conduct cardiac stress tests?
At my hospital we have an APRN conduct the stress test. The test is done in our Cardiology dept with cardiologist around but not required (i think) to be present in the room. I hope this helps.

IV Vita K
Yeah that has happen in our hospital. Now its almost second nature if we ever have to give it (which is few and very far between) to have our hospitals resource nurse there who is a critical care nurse who had a good amount of experience in case of an anaphylactic reaction

Called Off for Low Census!!!
I'm going through the same thing except we are going through low census after closing my original unit and combining us with another medical unit which has double occupancy rooms (my original unit only had singles except for one double room that was rarely used). But even with the merger they are still experiencing low census and people are getting sick of using PTO and we are all getting sick of floating & being on another unit. I mean I have barely any PTO as it is + working 12s = a big chunk out of my PTO bank. Luckily we are rolling out with some new patient centered care initiatives so on overstaffed days I get selected to be an educator (aka doing bs work)

some younger male nurses.....
Hahah I know that feeling. I grew a bear cause I looked like I was 12 but now I am just the floor teddy bear. But I digress, honestly is all about attitude. Personally I am the antithesis of what you say. 8 mos in and already I'm surpassing where I should be per my annual review and I am never below getting a small something or going that extra mile for a patient. In my opinion its all about attitude, young or old, male or female, there will be people who treat it as a career (wanting to do the work/its a calling) and there will be people who treat it as a job (wanting to do it for the money). Oh well thats my two cents... plus some bragging hah. Oh by the way I'm surprised patients still call me a doctor after i correct them and do my daily routine. I mean whens the last time a doctor got a patient a fresh water pitcher or helped them clean up/change their bed. I'm shocked when they know how to operate the beds but they are learning

male nurses with beards
I like having a beard cause I look slightly older (personally I think I look like I'm 12 without it). Even the other two male RNs on my floor have beards. One time a of the male student nurses made a joke saying "If I come to work here, am I required to grow a beard"

"New Nurses's Don't Know Anything."
The same thing happen to me recently (I am a new nurse as well). I had a older pt who had a very anxious family. Each time i walked in the room it seemed like they were about to go ballistic on me but after some talking they were calm and applicative but if i left the room for a while and then came back i'd have to go through the same song and dance with them. Its a crappy way to deal with stress but some times the nurse is there only focal point to get their frustration out. I just roll with the punches cause a majority don't mean to be that hostile to you.

Newbie Question
Hello all, So heres the deal. I'm a new grad and I have I got at least another 9mos of Med/Surg experience before I consider going down to the ED cause I want to build my skills and knowledge and work on time management . At the moment I have a friend going through Paramedic training and he says I should do that too if I plan on going to the ED. Now I've read that you'll get great experience and skills but since I am already an RN is it worth getting the cert? I love learning what I'm asking is would it be a waste of my time or a great experience? If not Paramedic, is there some other "prep" I can do before starting ED work?

Curious female here! :)
I am a recent grad and I am almost off orientation (I got strung along at this one hospital then the manager left so I was told I had no job. Oh well) But I thought about it as I was writing my notes and thinking about the day when it occurred to me that I couldn't see my self at a desk or doing anything else but nursing. Its almost second nature to me.
