Young Nursing Students

Published

We here all about nursing students who are going back to school and making nursing a second career for themselfs. I have a HUGE respect for these ladies and gents'!

What about us young nursing students? I think we have our own set of trials to go through. I am the youngest student in my college (pre-reqs) (due to awesome high school early admission). I do not look that young for my age but when people here I want to be a nurse they are very surprised!

Whats your story?

I'm 18 years old just out of high school and in my first semester of a 2 year RN program. Its difficult (in my opinion) to be a younger student because there are so many older students with health care experience. Yet, I'm so young, there is no way i could have the amount of knowledge they have from being techs or assistants in hospitals... But, there is always that advantage of not being married or having kids to take care of which makes things a lot easier! Good Luck to all nursing students!!!

i'm 19 and started my first semester of nursing school

If all goes well I will be an RN by the age of 20. I am the youngest one in the program. Its a little scary to be going in for a job with so much responsibility before I am even legally considered responsible enough to have a drink

I think I look young too...A doctor in clinical asked me if i was gonna be late for soccer practice, and then asked me how old I was.... infront of a patient. Being a young nursing student has its downsides and it can be very draining but in the long run you'll have more time to grow as a nurse and maybe even more!!

Specializes in Emergency Dept. Trauma. Pediatrics.

I can relate about the experience, I am older (almost 29) and I had no experience, not even med terminology. It hasn't slowed me down at all though.

Specializes in LTC, MDS Cordnator, Mental Health.

One of the students graduated from the LPN program and Highschool the same month. she also graduated from the same RN program I did 2 years later. she is currently working for a Dermatologist.

I'm 20, and am pretty positive I'm the youngest in my program.

Specializes in Medical-Surgical-Ortho-Neuro-Agency.

The way I see things, very cliche "Age ain't nothing but a number", is so...true!

Being an older nursing student doesn't make a person any smarter or dumber from another. It is the will to achieve your goals, should not be overlooked. I have had classmates both old and young, that were extremely bright. I do find it amazing with older students with millions of responsibilities, such as children, husband, loans (car/mortgages), having sleepless nights due to nursing. Likewise, some young students, independent from their parents, are working while attending school to make ends meet.

Nursing school is truly a SACRAFICE, we YOUNG and OLD, should work together, and learn from each other, and set aside any prejudices. :loveya:

Im 22 and in my last semester of nursing school and I am the youngest....everyone is older and some are married.

Specializes in critical care, PACU.

I turn 21 this november and graduate in december. There are some barriers with not being able to participate in "social events" and not taken seriously on the floor...but you just have to work that much harder to project your assertiveness and competence.

Specializes in Med/Surg, APU/PACU, Peds, Flight.

I graduated high school in 2006 at 18.

I will be graduating from nursing school with my BSN in May 2010 having just turned 22.

: )

I think it's great that all of you have figured out what you want to do so soon. I knew I wanted to be a nurse when I first started college at 18 but I didn't have the motivation to finish or to do well in classes. I was more interested in partying...I got married at 18 and had to work to pay bills, but my husband and I were still young and wanted to have fun. I wish I could go back now and have the same determination and focus as I do now, but I guess everything does happen for a reason. I wouldn't change anything because I have learned a lot about myself and now I know for sure, without a doubt that this is what I want to do with my life (career wise). I am now 26, a mother to two beautiful children and work full time. I'm hoping to start the nursing program in January, but I have to figure out some financial issues first as we have to have 2 incomes to pay all the bills. Yes, I do have a lot more on my plate than I did back when I should have finished school, but I'm a lot stronger than I was back then as well. By saying this about myself, I am not assuming that younger students are the same as I was at all, nor am I saying that younger students don't have a lot that they have to go through or any less stress in school. I hope I can figure out a way to raise my kids to do well in school and to finish college right after high school. I wouldn't change my path at this point, but I sure wish I knew then, what I know now!

Good luck to you all...I'm sure you will make great nurses!

Wow...I wanted to search for young nursing students and I hit the jackpot! I am 23 and going into nursing school April 2010. I will be 25 when I finish. Although now that I see most of you are around 19, I am not sure if I am considered a young nursing student anymore! Anyhoo, my first few years in college consisted of me not going to class and traveling instead! My soon to be husband (after NS :D) and I traveled for about 2 years! At times I really wish I knew what I wanted to do back then so I could have started but then I think..."but I would not have traveled and saw everything that I did". Everyone has their own paths and I don't regret mine! Congrats to everyone for getting into nursing school and becoming RNs!!!!!
