You want us to do what?!?

Nurses Relations

Published

So I work as an LPN in an outpatient clinic. I am fairly new, only been there a few weeks. At a staff meeting, our manager announced that for Christmas the entire staff was invited to go to a party at a local restaurant. Okay, that might be fun. Now for the kicker, she wants everyone to donate $20 each and treat all the doctors to dinner.

Yep, instead of talking about how great the staff was doing and how we all should celebrate the holidays together, she talked about how much the doctors do for us and what we should do for them. So me with my $11.66 an hour should pay for the dinner of someone whose salary makes a complete and total mockery of mine (not to mention the other office staff that make even less than us nurses do). Way to take my Christmas spirit, strangle it, then jump up and down on the dead body until there's nothing left but ash.

I don't mind the concept of doing something nice for the docs, but you need to consider our budget. I have about 500 other more important things to spend $20 on, like a winter coat for my kid, groceries, a desperately needed oil change, etc. It's just amazing to me that for a staff Christmas party the priority is treating the doctors. Most of whom I believe would be rather uncomfortable having us pay for their meals. One of our docs even said that it should be the other way around!

Anyway, thanks, but I think I have other plans that day, like doing laundry, or maybe scrubbing my bathroom.

At least you all get invited to dine together. At my hospital, the take great pains to segregate the doctors from the other staff members. They get their own catered Christmas party; the nurses and all other staff are invited to bring something to the pot luck in the hospital dining room.

I used to work for a small hospice company and every year, our medical director would treat us all to a nice dinner out as a way of showing his appreciation for all we did. That was always something to look forward to, he was so nice.

Your manager is nuts.

All of the employees who don't agree with this nonsense should simply decline the invitation. I'm sure this butt-kissing manager should read between the lines and know that her idea is ridiculous not to mention unfair.

Ha! What a joke!. I would be like" I think I'm busy that day, I'm busy on all days that end in Y"

Oh how I would laugh at this proposition if it weren't so sad. Sounds like your manager is looking to feather her own nest and grease some palms. Your manager is a symbol of everything that is wrong with nursing.

How on earth can you make a living on 11.66 an hour?? The LVNs in my part of California get paid $15 and I thought they were grossly underpaid. You should start at $25 an hour. That would be fair for the work you do.

That is weird. I think you are right that the docs would be just as uncomfortable with this as the nursing and support staff. What the hell? I love my docs, but generally speaking, the "higher ups" are supposed to show appreciation for us lowly support staff during the holiday season.

My favorite doctor buys lunch for all the staff on my unit (L&D), every single friday. He also keeps our staff fridge stocked with goodies. Last year he bought expensive chocolates and a bottle of wine for each RN. To be honest, these are the reasons he is my favorite OB! He can be.... slightly mysogynistic (calls us "his girls") and may not be the most patient with his primips. But, apparently I am easily bought with free lunch and alcohol!

I would have to decline.

Hu? The RN's in our state make about that much.

Good Lord, girl, where do you live that the LPNs only make $11.66 an hour??!! Here in my little corner of the world, they earn anywhere from $17-22/hr depending on work environment and experience. Wow. And I think this treating the doctors to dinner is ABSURD. I don't blame you for finding someplace else to be that day.

I've never heard of LVNs making that little! CNAs where I live make that much, crazy! The least I've seen an LVN make is $14, but that was for a state mental health clinic. On top of all of that they want you to chip in $20 for a dinner for the DOCTORS?? Hah! Yeah right! I don't know how much rent/bills/etc is where you live but on your salary can't be easy. That is just a ridiculous request.
