We all have those moments when suddenly our little corner of the world is brightened by someone or something and we think, I just love my job!

Share your I-love-my-job moment!

Specializes in Ortho, Neuro, Detox, Tele.

You celebrate a birthday for a patient...who hasn't had one in 15 years...with no family in the area. Also, you can't wait to go to work to see people who are your friends...

Specializes in Med/Surg, ICU, ED.

You see that look in someone's eye that says "I can't do this anymore....." and you do a little, simple thing and see in their eye "THANK YOU!" It doesn't get any better than that. I can't do everything.....but I can do something! :nuke: I appreciate the chance to try every day. Thank God for all the wonderful nurses out there that keep at it!

I hope I won't break the spell, but my job is the best. I work in outpatient surgery recovery room. Patients are generally healthy. I have no families to deal with, and basically no doctors (unless I need them to be there). I have one patient at the time, and usually have 4-6 patients a day. Between cases I read my books and do my schoolwork.

This is the best job I've had so far, and the most paying too.

Specializes in LTC, assisted living, med-surg, psych.

When you figure out that a resident who has battled episodes of facial pain for 25 years has trigeminal neuralgia, suggest it to her doctor, and take care of the whole problem with a little Tegretol.............and her daughter sends you a big vase full of flowers for solving the mystery.

When they stop by your office just to say: "If you ever leave this place, I'm moving out!!":D

Specializes in FNP, Peds, Epilepsy, Mgt., Occ. Ed.

Just when you think no one within a 150-mile radius has ever heard the word "gratitude," much less ever expressed it:

Your patient says, "You know, I appreciate this clinic so much. I can afford to come here and get my care, I can afford my medicines, and everyone here is so nice to me!"

Your rheumatoid arthritis patient tells you: "My daughter went with me last week when I got my IV therapy. She saw how much it cost when I signed the paper and she was so shocked! I told her "Honey, I thank God every day that I have this Medicaid that pays for these treatments for me!" And you know it's true, because this lady always thanks you for everything you do for her, and sometimes it's not much.

Specializes in Telemetry, Case Management.

  • When the worst part of my job is the commute
  • When we get to go home early because of a city-wide festival
  • When I talk with a patient, and actually feel like I contributed something to his/her health, and they were glad I talked with them.
  • When I need peace and quiet at home, and know I can get it at work the next day!!!!
  • I really really really love my job here!:yeah::heartbeat:typing:heartbeat:yeah:

Just when you start to think that no one notices what you do, how hard you work, etc a dr, pt, nurse, etc pulls you aside, gives you a hug and thanks you for all you do.

Specializes in Telemetry Step Down Units. Travel Nurse, Home Care.
Last weekend...

A surgeon stepped in front of my extremely challenging dad in one of my rooms (pt. was a 5 wk. old c pyloric stenosis repair) and said...

"It looked like you just handed a nurse your child so that she could change a diaper! I know you weren't doing that though, right?"

A few minutes later, he stepped right in front of same Dad as he attempted to hand me said dirty diaper (open) and blocked him, then asked for my opinion on wound care, saying "Kristen is an expert in many things."

If I weren't a happily married woman, I would have kissed him. Seriously.

Last night as I was making my rounds as I walked by this one pt's room, which was not assigned to me, the door was cracked and I hear the pt. say, "Angie? is that you out there?" I walked into the pt's room, this is a pt. that I admitted 1 week ago and took care of 3 nights in a row last week, although the pt. wasn't assigned to me last night, I stopped in to say hi and sat down to chat with the pt. for a few min. The pt. is a 33 y.o. with severe IDDM, L BKA from 06 and a new R foot amputaion that was done 1 week ago with a possibility of OHS in the near future. The pt. said to me, " I have been lost with out you taking care of me, the other nurses that I have had come in for about 30 seconds, bark some info at me and walk out. You were the only one that would check on me, make sure if I was ok and ask if I needed anything, turn my Light out at night, close my door so I could sleep, give me an extra blanket, put my prostesis on the side of the bed where I needed it so I could get to the bathroom, and you were the only nurse that would ask which finger I wanted to have stuck for my blood sugar. The other nurses come in flick on all the lights at all hours of the night and walk out of the room with out turing them off, and they would put my prostesis out of my reach so even if I wanted to turn out the lights I didn't have my 'leg' near by, it would be in the corner across the room. I can say that you are the only thing that got me through the night when you were my nurse, you treated me like human being and I thank you so much". I talked to this pt's nurse that was assigned to the pt. after I had left the room and the nurse( who is an experienced nurse) said, "the pt.s depressed and ignores me, the pt. only stares at the tv. I went in the room for like a Min. to do my assessment and left b/c the pt. didn;t say anything" The nursing assistant, who was sitting next to me, turns to the nurse and said, "the pt. talks to me, and the pt. asked for Angie to be the nurse tonight only after you stormed in the room didn't identify your self as the nurse, mumbled something and walked out, Angie's the only nurse on this floor that gives a D*** about any of these pt's and makes sure they are taken care of the way they should be" I was floored that the Nursing assistant said that to the other nurse, it was kind of uncomfortable. But I pulled the nurse aside and said, "just talk to the pt. for 5 min and the pt. will begin to open up" She said "I don't have time to do that", this was before the nurse took a 2 hour break. I said "neither do I, but I do it anyway b/c the pt. needs to know that I am there to take care of them, and the no matter how busy I am, I am always there if they need me". She laughed at me. But the point is, what the pt. said to me was why I love being a nurse. I didn;t get the R.N. bhind my name b/c of the money, it's because I care. The majority of my pt's say to me how wonderful it was to have me as their nurse during the night and ask if I am going to be back tonight, and of so can you be my nurse. And if I say that I have off that night, the pt's always say "well if I don't see you before I leave give me a hug b/c you were my angel of the night" I have had alot of pt's say "angel of the night" for some reason. I hve had pt's that have come back to my floor months after I have taken care of them b/c they needed a 2nd PTCA or something and say "Angie, you are my nurse tonight? I am going to have a good night, you were so good to me last time I was here!" No matter how crappy/crazy of a night I am having those words that come out of my pt's mouth always make me feel better and I know that's why I have a great job, b/c I know that my pt's are happy!

you look on your checkstub to see you grossed 8k on the last pay period :).

often, when i am waiting on some drug seeker or psych patient who is running me like mad in the middle of the night, i stop to think about this.. and i laugh and run a bit faster to wait on him/her.

I have to add this..I just worked 3 12's in a row with one day off and came back last night. There were pt.s that I had either admitted from the ER or came s/p PTCA or ICD insertion there were still there from this weekend. I wasn't their nurse tonight but I stopped in to say hi to the pt's. I saw one waving at me in the hallway and the pt.knew I only had one day off after working 3 in a row, and pt's an ex-nurse. Pt. had her family make me cookies and bring them in b/c the pt. knew I was comming back lastnight. I stopped in we talked, pt. gave me a big hug and said, "I missed you, I wish you were my nurse tonight":redbeathe..as I was making my rounds to see all of these pt's I had over the weekend b/c I just wanted to say hi, I stopped in another pt's room who I had during the 3 12's in a row but didn't have lastnight just to say hi, and the pt. was soo happy to see me, wanted to know what I did on my day off, if I got by finace a birthday present, did I get any sleep, the fact that the pt. rememberd I said it was my fiance's birthday on sunday and actually rememberd was awesome, pt's 87 y.o. and sharp as a tack..I chatted for a bit that pt. also gave me a hug, and said "Me and my family apperciate everything you did for me this weekend":heartbeat..those pt's, although they weren't mine last night, remembered me. And the last pt. I stopped in to say hello to, had his family bring pictures from home just to show me, b/c I said I wanted to see pics of his new grandson a few nights ago. He remembered my name too:yeah:..I always think if a pt. can remember your name after having a couple different nurses take care of them, I must have made an impact some way on that pt. and if the pt. asks how you are doing is something that makes my heart melt. They are sick, but I made a difference in some way that they feel the need to ask, how I am doing, is awesome, the fact that the pt. and the nurse have a realtionship, and the pt. cares about the nurse taking care of the them. And when they give you a big hug it feels like you have known that pt. all your life...even if it's only for a few days...:loveya:
