When your crazy little grandma pt. tells you, "I don't need no Son of a B medicine," and you tell her that isn't the kind you have and she considers it and it makes sense to her so she takes it!

A young Dialysis patient was "stuck" in an acute care setting because there was a LONG delay in his ability to get follow up care. He had been on our unit for over 3 weeks and was going "stir crazy". One day while I was quietly speaking to a family member outside the door of my patient this young man passed by and said "This is the best nurse on the floor". that made my day.

Another time one of my patients told his RN daughter that was on maternity leave, "when you go back to work I want you to be just like ******" (meaning me). WOW! What a compliment.

It is good to be validated if you are doing something right. God knows we are sure "raked over the coals" if we make a mistake.

When you get a baby that was born to breastfeed and a new mother that acts like she was born knowing how!

When new daddies cry holding their babies for the first time! :up:

I ask my charge for help and - tada! - I get it! :D

When you are HAPPY there!

When you love to meet your collegues...because they care!

When you love to meet you patient grumpy becuase she asked "you let me alone ... where you was 2 days i miss you" and she become grummpy agian, loooool was just my ONLY 2 days off.

When a lawyer patient relative question you 2 hours and after walking to the door, smile at you and ask "you will be here tommorow? We will meet again tommorow" and you know that NOW after receiving all responses he is happy and peacefull (to make a lawyer peaceful...haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard time, looooooool)

When you fell that your work is your home!

Is hard to describe the hapiness with a great job, but will know when it is and when is not.

Making others happy....and be yourself happy at work beeing nurse this is a great job for me!

Last weekend...

A surgeon stepped in front of my extremely challenging dad in one of my rooms (pt. was a 5 wk. old c pyloric stenosis repair) and said...

"It looked like you just handed a nurse your child so that she could change a diaper! I know you weren't doing that though, right?"

A few minutes later, he stepped right in front of same Dad as he attempted to hand me said dirty diaper (open) and blocked him, then asked for my opinion on wound care, saying "Kristen is an expert in many things."

If I weren't a happily married woman, I would have kissed him. Seriously.

Whatever the surgeon's favorite treat was, I'd have given him the biggest one I could've found. Outstanding!!!! :yeah::yeah:

When the parent of an adolescent patient tells you "you helped my son more than the specialist I took him to."

When the parent of a 13 year old female brings her in because an older teen boy is hanging around, and the mom is worried. "You talk to her, she'll listen to you!" And she does.

When your diabetic patient's hemoglobin A1C goes from 13 to 6.

When your hypertensive patient goes from 210/120 to 120/70. It took four weeks and four meds to get there, but he kept every appointment and took every med and actually listened to you.

Mine was just updated yesterday! I use to work in an ALF for 4 years and went back to Med Surge for various reasons to long to tell right now (old members may remember the many reasons and helped me to choose med/surge again...I still thank you all for the support!)....well...I had a patient yesterday that I knew from that ALF...

The lady was in her late 80's and getting a heart cath job...she remembered me right away by name and said how much she felt safe because I was the most proactive nurse towards her...well she called them inmates...LOL...but the people of the facility! Well that made me blush big time...

Well after the heart cath...first 45 minutes just peachy..then all the sudden SVT and dyspnea...sudden and bad...long story short...coded her before she was pulseless and apnec and turned her around with the help of the code team!

Her daughter came up to me as we went to her new pcu room and hugged me. She told me her mother expressed feeling so safe with me, and now she knew why! That I was her mothers guardian angel, and nothing could ever thank me for that!

I said...actually you did honey! One, you came and got me right away...so you were the first most essential member of her health team! Two, you stayed yet stayed out of the way for all those people and quietly watched. Three, you remained supportive and held your mothers hand. Four...you just gave me a hug and expressed yourself...and we nurses don't get that very much anymore! So THANK YOU!!!!!! You did what I wanted to do but couldn't, and still thanked ME!?!?! (Yeah, we both teared up and hugged hard!)

That was a great and wonderful moment...makes my job well worth it!

Following that one up; when work rings up to say that the family would like you to go to the funeral...

Also, I love it when long term patients finally are able to find a location which is more appropriate for their needs instead of being stuck in a room with four walls in a high rise building, with minimal places to 'take time to smell the flowers'.

Finally, saying 'goodbye' to a patient who, no matter what their state of health, has gained control over their situation. Eg paliative patients, who have the information, supports, and education to know how to express what they need, and make informed decisions about what they perceive is unnecessary, despite what the 'experts' say.

* When I know that the hardest part of my day will be the commute - weather will ensure that we are "grounded" and will get to nap, go out to dinner and watch DVD's! :D

* The best part. Our recent "save" of a man that went into vfib as we put him on our stretcher - we resuscitated him, elected RSI to maximize myocardial oxygen delivery post resus, delivered to definitive care - he was released a week later intact at 100% and will return to see another day, his kids grow up and return to the job as a dedicated public servant. It does not get any better than that!!!

* I recently watched the sun set and the full moon rise at the same time - on opposite sides of the helicopter. We were above ground at 2000 feet and the the sight was simply breathtaking. The sky was clear and there were more colors than I could count. I am certain that THAT was a gift from heaven.

I have the best job in the world.

I am privileged and blessed.

My unit manager and charge nurse let me arrange my schedule around taking my husband to his chemo appointments. My unit supports me so much emotionally we really are like a family.
