You Arent Supposed To Hold A Newborn Baby If On Menstrual Cycle?

Specialties Ob/Gyn Nursing Q/A

I have been having a debate about this with some people. They swear that it's so true, but I just don't believe it. I actually think it's kind of silly, an old wives tale at best. Someone even told me that the MD's and RN's tell mothers this before they are discharged, but I have two kids and have NEVER heard of such a thing.

So I wanted to come here and ask some of you experienced nurses about this. Have you ever heard of it and if so is there any validity to it?

Sounds bunk to me. But it got me thinking...isn't the normal bleeding/lochia that occurs following delivery pretty much the same as a period? All that fun stuff in the uterus has to shed during the postpartum period. If you look at this way, then this theory is extra bunk. Because then pretty much all newborns would be constipated.

You had me pretty much up until that last line Chlo! ROFL! too funny ... ?

Hay you never know! I had an iud placed and ever sence Right befor my time of the month I find myself wanting a baby ? And trust me I really DO NOT . I also just ordered a case of Pickles and bought 4 bags of candy . I think Im going nuts !!!!.

Is this from the same people who were shocked they had a baby in the first place because they drank mountain dew. Probably some tired mom made it up to get a break.

It's actually a Biblical thing and it's not just related to holding babies. Women were referred to as "unclean" when they were having their menses. (did someone already discuss this? I am foggy today) -

I actually read a novelization of a Bible story that was called "The Red Tent." I don't know if this was how they really did things but it sounded good to me!

They presented it that women having their menses would gather in this tent until their period was over. They'd then purify themselves and return to their own tents. I thought, now what a great thing - I get my period, I go to the tent, I hang out w/ my girlfriends, no babies, no husbands, cooking what WE wanted to eat (chocolate anyone? and not having to share w/ our piggy families, YAHH!) - and when it's done, I can go back. I think it's win/win.

My Grandpa swore all of us girls had to stay out of the cucumber patch during our periods or the plants would die.

Is this limited to cucumbers only? What about squash? Beans? :bdyhdclp:
