Yik Yak...its an app :(

Aye Yay Yay!!!

There is a new app that my HS kids are using and it is terrible!

It is called YIK YAK.

The premise is, once downloaded, they can post stuff anonymously and it is HORRIBLE!!!!! Once it is posted, whoever has the app and is with in a certain geographical area, based on GPS settings, can read the info.

Kids are posting other kids phone numbers saying "call 123-4567 and Susie will give you (inset extremely rude and graphic action here). Anyone who sees it sees what is said.

Parent and Administrators need to talk to heir kids about how hateful this is. Parents need to be checking their kids phones and making sure they delete that app.

Great - another way kids can be mean and bully each other! Now, I'm not that old, but I miss the days when I was in MS/HS and the internet was still a baby and no students had cell phones.

I don't have tech knowledge but I'm guessing that anyone can use the app so adults can be mean & bullies, too (Like nurses yaking about other nurses?)

We have Yik Yak here as well and the kids don't use it. It's really not a thing at all. They would rather post pics of themselves at parties that YOU weren't invited to on Instagram.

I'm glad I grew up without the Internet. I truly am. I went to NYC and said I was sleeping at my friends house instead, and NO ONE KNEW!

We got away with a lot. But we were also...less mean? Narcissistic?

Sadly it IS a thing here...I got on it yesterday and read some of the postings....truly horrible, mean and pushed a child to the point of stating they wanted to kill themselves over it....truly agonizing to see this child in crisis over such BS, (what was posted as reprehensible).

Fortunately, they allow for a GEO Shield to be placed around a school (based on GPS coordinates) but the kids can take a snapshot of the page (with their phone) and save and post and share other sites....

I hope that it never becomes a thing where you are.

Yik Yak was a (horrible) thing here last year and once word got out, the district quickly banned it and made it unaccessable at school. It died down pretty quickly after that, thankfully, and hasn't been mentioned since. Hopefully, the same will happen in your area.

i downloaded it to check it out. not really anything other than just random banter - nothing mentioning any students or any names in particular. what i did notice though is that i tried to look at it while i was at work and it wouldn't let me because it told me i was too close to a school. i suppose there are ways around that by turning off location and such but still thought it was an interesting feature

At my house, it's all college kids wanting to hook up.

At school, it's all college kids making poop jokes. (Different college.)

It's all anonymous, no calling-out anyone, around here there's none of the stuff you're seeing.
