I try to read allnurses many times a week and this week has me very depressed and wondering if I have chosen the wrong field. I'm hoping to be accepted into nursing school for this next Fall but now I am wondering if I should rethink this if I am accepted. I'm curious to know how many of you are still happy about your career choice and if your unhappy, why is that.
Thanks so much for your responses they made me feel much better. I know that I want to be a nurse but as I said, some of the posts I have read lately are a little depressing. It's nice to hear something positive from those of you who have so many years of experience in nursing.
ICAN, I have to agree with you. I have been considering nursing for a while and found this forum in the hopes that it would give me an idea of what it's like. And, boy, some of the posts have REALLY made me think twice. But, I figure the only way to know for sure is to find out for myself. And, like the others have said, there are so many different avenues in nursing, some of which I never even knew about until I got on here.
And, just to let you know - Corp. America has all the same gripes that some of these nurses have. They complain just as much if not more about being overworked, underpaid, etc. It's the "grass is greener" mentality where everybody thinks somewhere else might be better. Most times it's not.
And, kudos to all the nurses who responded with positive words about their job. It's motivating although I wish you all would be the majority and not the minority.

been a nurse for 19 yrs. and still trucking. yes it is very hard and trying @ times, but we all knew this wasn't a glamrous job to begin with. i still enjoy helping people and the 1 out of 5 patients who let you know they appreicate you makes the difference. its the paperwork and attiudes of others that sometimes makes the job rough. but it is a worthwhile profession and one to be proud of.

DTSH26, I also didn't know there were so many other avenues in nursing until I started reading allnurses. I guess if you don't like one area you can try another. My ultimate dream is to work my way into travel nursing someday.
Thank you all for the responses.
This spring I will have been licensed for 8yrs. Worked in a huge variety of settings, however I am so burned out on nsg, healthcare and anything that has to do w/ organized health systems. Nsg is great b/c there is a million different avenues to persue and ever changing methods/tx/ and ways to reinvent your practice. This is a good site to read regularly then you may not be as disillusioned as some when its your turn!
