Yale 2015

Published

I've never posted here before but I am going to be applying to Yale School of Nursing this fall for a 2015 start in the GEPN program, CNM/WHNP cohort. Wondering if there are others out there preparing to do the same? I'm heading down to their info session next week.

Accepted to UVa, waiting to hear back from UCSF, Duke, and Hopkins.

I did not bother to apply to Columbia because of the price although I know two people who go there and they seem to enjoy it.

Yale is my top choice for the most part but then I hear -- mainly on this site -- somewhat negative things about the program, which kind of put a bug in my ear and make me doubt whether I'd like to attend. Silly, I know, but it happens.

My posts are so full of typos. Excuse me! We are very rural so I use my phone for Internet a lot of times and autocorrect just does what it does. Ha

Same as you guys - heard from Columbia and Vandy. I'm iffy on the Vandy program but I decided to put down the deposit and check out the campus since all the NPs I work with had amazing things to say about Vanderbilt's nursing school. Interestingly enough, those same NPs were pretty iffy on Yale. From a healthcare provider standpoint, they said that Yale health is not doing too hot. I'm not sure how that influences the nursing school. At the very least, their input was enough to make me reflect on the schools I've heard from so far. I've still got a few more to hear from, too, so I'm trying not to get too invested in any one program.

Could you elaborate on the healthcare thing? I know Vandy's hospital is starting to make nurses take on janitorial duties as well as nursing duties. This alarmed me, so I thought it would be the opposite. You are welcome to DM me on the subject or post it here, if you have info. I'm in psych specialty, too, so we're in the same boat.

Got an email about Yale's information session for the GEPN program. There's one on 3/11 and another on 3/20. Pretty terrible timing for me because I booked my tickets to go to New York to visit Columbia on 3/11-14 but I won't be able to make it to Yale's information session in time on 3/11 :/

Hope someone can go though!

That sounds like a good sign for you! You're not missing much, the new nursing building itself is nice but boring. It's not like any of the pretty old main campus buildings. I'm sure there'll be more going on at Columbia's visiting day. I'm thinking I may not be able to make that but I really hope I figure out how to swing it. I'd like to be able to compare campuses.

Any RN applicants know the timeline for hearing back about interviews?

I read somewhere on the YSN website that they do interviews in Feb, March, and if needed, April.

I currently work at Yale Health, and while it seems as though the organization has been tightening its purse strings as of late, I would say we are far from struggling by any means. Yale Health limits service to Yale students, faculty and staff, and their spouses. It's both a great place to work and receive healthcare! Clinical rotations do not take place at Yale Health. A few students may end up working per diem shifts at the clinic upon receiving RN licensure.

I met a former Yale nursing student (GEPN > MSN) that described the nursing school as "conservative". Can anyone elaborate? I was just chatting with her before a brunch, and she was seated first so I didn't get a chance to follow up.

What specialty was she?

She said it was a few years ago and the speciality doesn't exist any more - adult gero/women's health...

AUGH now i've heard from every school except for Yale. These next 10 days are going to crawl. I really hope we hear 2/27!
