Yale 2015

Published

I've never posted here before but I am going to be applying to Yale School of Nursing this fall for a 2015 start in the GEPN program, CNM/WHNP cohort. Wondering if there are others out there preparing to do the same? I'm heading down to their info session next week.

When are we supposed to find out about the decisions? Is it the end of this month?

2/27 is the day MP put out.

2/27 or possibly 3/2

Has anyone heard back from other schools? Is Yale your first choice? I was lucky enough to get into 2 out of the 3 I applied to (Vandy and Columbia are the two others). I declined Vanderbilt and I'd say Yale is my first choice between Columbia and Yale. I really just fell in love with the program at interview day.

I also got into Columbia and Vanderbilt but I declined Vanderbilt. I'm not too sure about Columbia vs Yale if I got into Yale. I'll have to reflect more on this. Unfortunately, I could not make it to the interview on campus so I had a phone interview. I suppose I missed out on the experience...

I think what I liked about it was that they seem very close knit. One professor talked about having struggling students over at their house every Sunday morning to make sure they passed. They said they don't admit a ton of students and use the academics to weed people out. They genuinely seemed like they pick the people they want in the program and then give whatever resources it takes to make sure students are successful. That was what I can away from te day with. Of course these days are to sell themselves as much as they are for us to sell ourselves but even the current student panel had excellent things to say.

Also a lot of the faculty in my specialty at Columbia come from Yale which I thought was interesting.

Same as you guys - heard from Columbia and Vandy. I'm iffy on the Vandy program but I decided to put down the deposit and check out the campus since all the NPs I work with had amazing things to say about Vanderbilt's nursing school. Interestingly enough, those same NPs were pretty iffy on Yale. From a healthcare provider standpoint, they said that Yale health is not doing too hot. I'm not sure how that influences the nursing school. At the very least, their input was enough to make me reflect on the schools I've heard from so far. I've still got a few more to hear from, too, so I'm trying not to get too invested in any one program.

What did they say about Columbia?

Haha to quote one of the NPs, "I wasn't smart enough to get into columbia." Which made me feel fancy (and I doubt that since they are in charge of all the NPs at an area hospital). Generally positive, but they said it's a bit "stuffy."

It seems like alum of different programs largely seem to vouch for their own programs and cast shade on others. YSN alums have told me that Columbia's program is becoming so much less competitive and more overpriced, and Columbia alum tell me that YSN is on shaky ground. It seems to me like it's just sharp elbows though; both programs (along with UCSF, Vandy, etc) all have great NCLEX pass rates, and I keep meeting interesting alum from all of the programs doing inspiring work. I have faith that all of these programs can produce awesome nurses, especially if you feel like you "click" with the students and faculty.

In the meantime, the anticipation is killing me!
