Hello everyone! This thread is for folks applying to Yale's GEPN program for the fall 2023 start.
Feel free to introduce yourself, ask questions and offer guidance and support to other candidates. Please be respectful and kind and remember that this is a long, exhausting, expensive, stressful journey for lots of people. Let's do our best to uplift and help each other. Good luck!
mmCA said:I just had my interview! I was super excited-nervous (and a little sweaty). I would describe it as an energetic conversation between two like-minded, passionate people who believe in midwifery and sexual/reproductive healthcare! My interviewer had definitely read my application thoroughly and she asked a number of questions about my experiences/identity/goals. She specifically mentioned that they try to ask all applicants a number of the same questions to ensure that there is equity in the process. For ethical reasons, I won't say exactly what those questions are, but they're all in line with the application questions--really no surprises! Know yourself, know your motivations, know nursing and your specialty, understand "better health for all people" and share yourself!
My interview ran long by about six minutes. I had so many questions that I did not have time to ask. Uff. They're really tight on time, and they're having a little trouble with the virtual meeting links. Keep your phone nearby and on prior to the interview! My interviewer called me ten minutes prior to confirm my email address, saying she needed to send me a new link. She emailed a zoom link directly to me, because the link set up within my YSN application portal was not going to be viable. It sounds like this is a widespread problem, so be ready for it.
Good luck everyone! Let us know how your interview goes!
Huge congrats! Can tell from your words that how well it went, and it makes feel me so excited as well!
One more thing I forgot to mention: my interviewer brought up (I did not ask) and shared that she wants candidates to know that the interview is just one part of the application process. It generally doesn't make or break an admission decision and it should be thought of as one of many components that helps round out the admissions committee's understanding of an applicant. So don't panic if you feel like your interview is not 100% perfect!
Hi all! Congrats to everyone who has already done an interview and best of luck to those still preparing!
I am in the latter category, with an interview for FNP on the 11th, and I had a question for folks who have already interviewed. I know several people have said that the interviewers referenced your application materials (essays, resume, etc), but I was curious about the additional materials for the Community Scholars Program. I submitted the three additional essays for the Community Scholars Scholarship, but I wasn't sure if the interviewers will also have access to those? Did anyone have their interviewers reference any of those additional essays?
Thanks and best of luck all!

My interviewer did not reference my Community Scholars Application but I brought it up and explained what I had written in those essays! She seemed to not know that I had applied so I put some of those points in my interview answers!

Thanks so much for sharing! I had planned to share some of those points in my interview answers but was worried about being redundant.
Hi! I have been confused over one question specifically - in my understanding, the duties of a nurse and an advanced practice nurse are quite different (please correct me if this is wrong!), and when they ask, "why nursing", is that a different question from "why advanced practice nursing/why your specialty"?
That being said, I do like this field as a whole because I enjoy providing care and help to others, but in the end, it is the ability to prescribe and provide holistic care (assessment, treatment, etc...) that deeply interest me. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The difference will be in the educational process for us. You may in your life have observed cultural differences between how physicians and NPs approach practice. Why are you choosing this instead of going to medical school then a psychiatry residency?
I suggest researching and considering those questions as they relate to your specialty and to healthcare more broadly. "Why nursing?" is partly asking you what you understand about the nursing profession, philosophy and role/responsibility/scope of practice of a nurse, and partly asking you to differentiate nursing from medicine/sociology/public policy/other disciplines. That really gets to the heart of what nurses bring to their work and their patients broadly. Then you should also research and understand the differences between the scope/role of an RN within your field and be able to contrast it to an APRN within your field. For the RN role, think about things like holistic approach to healthcare, understanding/addressing social determinants of health, individualized care, patient-/family-centered care, direct care/bedside support, caring for the whole person rather than "treating disease", etc. APRN roles generally encompass the philosophical aspects of the nursing profession, but have vastly more responsibilities than RNs, are accountable for the patient care plan, must be comfortable giving orders (rather than simply receiving and carrying out providers' orders), etc. You might check out the APRN association (https://storage.AANP.org/www/documents/advocacy/position-papers/Scope-of-Practice.pdf) and PMHNP associations (Vanderbilt offers a list: https://nursing.vanderbilt.edu/MSN/pmhnp/pmhnp_associations.php)
In my case, labor & delivery/postpartum RNs and RNs in womxn's health clinics have very different job descriptions and scopes of practice than midwives/WHNPs. The latter are primary and preventive care providers, as well as maternity care providers in the case of CNMs, with direct responsibility for comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and development of care plans.

@mmCA so glad to hear that your interview seemed to go well!! now it’s just the waiting game..
Just like everyone else has said, to everyone who has yet to do their interview- just be yourself, be enthusiastic about your specialty and really show the interviewer who you are as a person! I emphasized to my interviewer about my specific goals and passions as well, and it went very well.
My interviewer gave me his email address for any questions I may have in the future, and I am wondering if I should send him a thank you email? I’ve seen some people do so in the past, so I am thinking to do it as well!
