Yale GEPN Applicants 2011

Published

It didn't look like there was a thread for 2011 Yale GEPN applicants. Since the application recently opened, I thought I'd start a thread to see if anyone else is starting to work on their application.

Anyone else out there?

Did anyone notice a statement that says you won't receive the YSN Scholarship unless you accept the other loans? I was planning on only taking that scholarhsip but not other loans so I don't have to be in debt after school!

For those of you that went to Columbia's admit day, did you get the sense that we received the 25k scholarship regardless of whether we took separate loans?

i'm curious about this too... i would be okay accepting the subsidized loans but not the unsubsidized since 6.8% interest is pretty high and i can get a private loan for a lower interest rate. so if we don't accept both loans, our YSN scholarship goes away? :(

and i think for columbia, that 25K is guaranteed no matter what.

Which private loans are you looking into?

Wowza! I thought the scholarship would be around $10,000; and you guys are getting much less than that. Haven't received my financial aid yet, but now I'm not looking too forward to it!

What kinds of rates are being quoted for private loans?

I got my financial aid package also. There aren't any loans listed (could be because of my EFC though.) Also got a letter that I got a person's name merit scholarship for different amounts each year and guidelines to maintain it.

I haven't gotten my financial aid package yet. This could be a function of the fact that I live in CA, or because of the on-campus housing mailrooms at my University... In either case, I hope I get it soon! :banghead:

I live in CA also and got my packet Saturday or yesterday (was out of town until Sunday night so not sure when it arrived). It also depends on when you filled out your FAFSA (I filled mine out well over a month ago).

I am in CA also and received my fianancial aid information yesterday. Of course I wasn't expecting a full ride or even close to it:rolleyes: but it was still a firm reality check. I am set in my decision to attend Yale, but the money issue is still sitting uncomfortably in the back of my mind.

@SCNP2B - I got my fin aid info yesterday as well - it definitely hit me hard how expensive these 3 years is going to be. I'm like 99% sure I still want to go to Yale but I'm just going to have to scramble a bit to see how I'm going to afford it all. Thankfully I did get a pretty good grant from their school.

Although I'm a bit worried - I had filled out my FAFSA using Columbia's guidelines so I marked "5th yr/undergrad" and "2nd bachelors" as opposed to applying as a grad. student. Do you think this will be a huge issue? I'm changing it today but I'm not sure if that means I should mail in my acceptance of the financial aid now. Anyone else in this position?

@amalay: On interview day, the financial aid coordinator (her name escapes me now) addressed that question, as many applicants were in the same boat re: 2nd bachelors for Hopkins, Columbia, UPenn, etc. She said that they took that into consideration when they compiled your offer, so even though your fin aid awards from the BSN/MSN schools would most likely not include Stafford loans, that your Yale fin aid letter should (if you qualified). She welcomed applicants to call/email her if they had any questions regarding this issue.

Thanks SCNP2B! =]

For those of you who have already decided...how are you planning on looking for housing? Is anyone considering to live in the graduate housing? I might head over sometime in the summer to look for an apartment - would love to do a meet-up!! We have family friends that might own a small house (for rent) close to campus; would anyone consider rooming together? I have to check though, haven't looked to see where it is in relation to the campus yet.
