Yale GEPN Applicants 2011

Published

It didn't look like there was a thread for 2011 Yale GEPN applicants. Since the application recently opened, I thought I'd start a thread to see if anyone else is starting to work on their application.

Anyone else out there?

Thanks SCNP2B! =]

For those of you who have already decided...how are you planning on looking for housing? Is anyone considering to live in the graduate housing? I might head over sometime in the summer to look for an apartment - would love to do a meet-up!! We have family friends that might own a small house (for rent) close to campus; would anyone consider rooming together? I have to check though, haven't looked to see where it is in relation to the campus yet.

Speaking of which - I've noticed in other threads that every other school has a facebook page up... is anyone creating one for Yale?

Farful & Everyone! -

I created a 2011 GEPN group on FB so we can all easily connect with each other. Here is the link: http://www.facebook.com/editgroup.php?gid=146360438760568#!/home.php?sk=group_146360438760568

There are 3 members already, and this will be a great way for us to get to know each other, ask questions, find roomates, and vent. Looking forward to getting to know everyone =)

amalay- sorry i lost your email address but mine is [email protected]

Does anyone have any misgivings about the GEPN program? I do think Yale has a great program, there were a few things that bothered me when I went for the interview and I am just wondering if anyone has different perspectives.

For one, there are no prerequisites, yet the general nursing portion of the program is shorter than most other nursing (pre-specialty) programs: 3 semesters vs. 4. Do they make up for the lack of prereqs or do they skip over some material?

I remember them saying that they did not help prepare us for the NCLEX. They taught the information they thought we needed to know to be NPs, even if there was other stuff we may need to know for the exam or to be a RN. Basically, it sounded like we are on our own for preparing the NCLEX. I don't believe in teaching for an exam, but we still need to pass it in order to become NPs. Also, we are not allowed to take the NCLEX until after our first semester in the NP specialty (spring second year). With most NP programs, you have to be an RN before you can start training for NP. I know about the CT law for taking the NCLEX, but I'm still not sure if taking the NCLEX later is good or bad.

Also, while I think it is fantastic that we are in the hospital for clinical within the first couple of weeks, Yale does seem to be lacking in some standard nursing school facilities, namely simulation labs. I think they said they had recently bought one simulator, but I notice other schools have many simulators of different levels for students to practice and train on.

Finally, on my interview day, I don't remember any of the students from the student panel being really excited about the GEPN program. Yes, they seemed to like being at Yale and thought it was a good program, but they also had some issues with its lack of organization, etc. Does anyone else remember their student panel and what they talked about?

They said the reason they don't have prerequisites is because people oftentimes don't remember the information they even learned in the pre-reqs to begin with. What you really need to know about the science you will learn in the GEPN program.

I thought the students were fantastic at the student panel - they were honest and candid, but also seemed genuinely happy with their decision to attend Yale. I'm going to be coming as a mom, and I remember the student mother there was very supportive and said that it was definitely doable and that Yale was very good about meeting the needs of students. I thought that for the most part the students were really really happy to be there - at least as happy as students generally are with any other masters-entry type program.

Also, Yale has a very high first time NCLEX pass rate, so even if they don't technically help prepare us for the exam, I think that there is definitely the support there for exam prep.

As to the rest of your concerns I don't know much about them. It seems that a lot of these types of programs are complained about for their lack of organization, so I'm sure that's to be expected some. Anyway, this is all a very personal decision, and I'm sure there are benefits and drawbacks of most of the programs out there. Needless to say, I'm really excited to probably be going to Yale in the fall.

Pam -

did you join the 2011 GEPN Facebook group I created? If not, scroll up this page and you will find the link. I'm sure you can also search in FB for "Yale 2011 GEPN". You are from CA also right (sorry I've exchanged emails with quite a few people from this thread so I get the info mixed up sometimes!)? If you still live here, we should meet up before school begins. I am not 100% decided on Yale, but almost there lol. I'm still mulling over Columbia and OHSU and have to decide pretty darn soon!
