Yale GEPN Applicants 2011

Published

It didn't look like there was a thread for 2011 Yale GEPN applicants. Since the application recently opened, I thought I'd start a thread to see if anyone else is starting to work on their application.

Anyone else out there?

Thanks for checking Yogaseli! This is a bummer for me because I'm flying out East Thursday morning at 6am to go to Columbia's admitted students day, so I won't be able to obsessively check my mail, and won't be able to check at all until Sunday when I'm back! I was also hoping to travel to New Haven and check out apartments (assuming I got into Yale) on my trip but now will have no idea if I should be investing my time in this! :uhoh3:

There is a new director of admissions this year; maybe he doesn't use email... or maybe he has no fingers, that's always a possibility

AH that's SO LONG! (I mean, it's not, but it is!!!) Tanya you might hear before you leave if you're leaving Thursday! I will keep my fingers crossed for you! Any chance somebody can check your mail for you? :) Looking forward to meeting you at Columbia's day!!

WE ARE SO CLOSEEE!

Hi Williams -

I will definitely be calling my parents and roomate aobsessively asking them to check their mailboxes EVERY DAY while I'm gone :p. I e-mailed SE on the off-chance she would let me know before I leave, but that was a no-go...never hurts to ask! Crossing my fingers that the mailman carrying my letter is hopped up on caffeine and somehow makes it across the country by Wednesday!

Just curious; how much does your interaction with an admissions office make you more or less interested in going to a school? I have had very good experiences with some schools, and others couldn't care less that I exist. How much can we extrapolate to the quality and culture of the school itself?

Boto - I have been wondering the same. JHU is sooo nice to me -- and that makes me like them a lot more than I did before. Other schools are been fairly cold.

Part of me feels like I have a better chance of getting in if I obsessively check this message board... so I think we're all in good shape ;).

Here's to hoping that the Chicago mail system doesn't let me down this week. They don't have the best reputation for timely delivery... :-/

I don't think you should put too much weight on treatment from the admissions committee as it relates to quality of the school. The most personable school I have dealt with, U of Rochester, has probably the lowest rating of all the schools I applied to, but possibly trying to compensate for this they personally called me to let me know of my acceptance and were very personable throughout the entire process. The thing is that the schools that aren't as competitive have more time to be personal, whereas the more competitive schools (e.g. UCSF) have way more apps to go through and probably just don't have the extra time to invest personally in each and every student. They also may not feel that they need to since they know they are top notch schools that everyone wants to get into.

This philosophy may be completely errneous, as I felt Yale and Columbia - both great schools - were pretty personable throughout the process, but this is just my :twocents::twocents:

I would really like to go to Columbia's visiting day knowing my Yale status, but more importantly, to know if I need to make changes to my FASFA due on Wednesday. Since CU wants us listed as undergrads and Yale has us as graduate students.

I wonder if we're on the same flight Tanya, I'm leaving from Burbank at 7am ??

psych7: At the Yale interview day the Financial Aid woman said they will change your status to Graduate from Undergraduate because they understand you are putting in information for more than one school. Actually, she said said specifically that even though Yale doesn't grant a BSN so it isn't undergraduate, some schools you are applying to are undergraduate, so put undergraduate in and Yale can change it on their end. I wouldn't worry too much about the FASFA form, as long as your tax info, etc are up-to-date Yale should be able to present you with a package. I think Columbia prefers that you put in undergraduate though.

Hey Psych - I wish we were on the same flight, but I'm leaving from the San diego airport =0

Perhaps we should be most impressed with schools that are very competitive and personable and unimpressed with schools that are uncompetitive and unpersonable then! I agree with another poster that Hopkins has definitely been in the personable category. I haven't had any issues at all with Yale, other than the fact they could easily ease the stress of waiting on decisions with very little effort on their end, but have chosen not to.
