WSSU ABSN 2014

Anyone applying for the ABSN program at Winston-Salem State University this year? Just wondering if there were others out there who would be in the same boat.

Has anyone heard of funding this year?

Does anyone know how they rank applicants?

Thanks and Good Luck to all!

I believe that everyone is interviewed for Baptist funding. Last year, I think we all had an interview minus a couple of people. I do remember hearing one of my classmates say they never contacted her for an interview, and she is an in-state student. If Baptist does not contact you, I would highly suggest contacting the HR department and making sure you get an interview.

As for what Baptist covers, they pay for tuition and books. You do not receive a living stipend, so I have had to take out a substantial amount of loans for rent, bills, and living expenses. They also pay for various fees such as the ATI fee and for NCLEX prep classes this year. However, that could change. Every year, they have offered funding to less students or have decreased the amount of expenses that they cover. They chose 16 of us from this years cohort to be funded.

Hey all! Congrats and good luck to everyone accepted! I graduated from this program Feb. 2012 and I have been a practicing nurse. So here are a few truths and tips and tricks to the program.

1. It's hectic and disorganized so just be ready to roll with the punches. Because of this when everything is going to hell around me on the unit I'm generally unfazed.

2. Keep copies of everything!!!!! EVERYTHING!!! When started clinicals they lost half of our shot records so if you didn't have copies you were screwed. Make copies of everything and anything you give anyone!

3. You will be prepared upon graduation! Only one person failed the Nclex...that's because she took it like 2 weeks after graduation. Every single one of had jobs after graduation. They're annoying in their methods but they work.

4. Speak up when something is wrong but don't whine about everything. We had a saying about nursing school questions "while that answer is correct, it is not the most correct". The test answers will **** you off royally...don't argue about every single one...you'll get nowhere! Pick your battles.

5. Get a good nclex comprehensive study book early on. It will save you time and energy. Also find good study buddies...ditch the leeches!

Good luck everyone!

So what color were your scrubs for clinical settings?

When did you get your list for books?

What did people do who didn't get the Baptist or the RWJF scholarship???? Were they able to find enough financial aid??

The scrubs are all white. I believe we got our list of books during orientation, you don't need to buy all the books especially the nutrition one. Also you don't need the latest edition. I heard from a reliable source that Baptist was meeting yesterday to determine who and how many they are going to fund. Decisions will probably not be released until at least the middle of December. With regards to finances, there were people who were able to survive solely on financial aid, I believe most of them had part time jobs or some type of family support though, it would be tough but possible in the right situation. Also make sure you apply for the Forgivable Education Loans for Service through the state of North Carolina, its $7500.

Thank you dontdoit for everything! :)

They have already made calls today for interviews, I called up to Baptist and was told they selected 20 people for interviews and that it could take up until early next week to make all of those calls. Keeping faith, being patient. :)

All I know is that I have gotten this far, I just need the funds in order to attend.

What is the Forgivable Education Loans for Service??? Is that if you enter into the military after school???

I live with two people from my program. We met at orientation, looked for a place and moved in. I suggest you do the same. Or maybe you can communicate with the members in your cohort through your fb group.

Can you guys give an estimate on the total cost of the program including tuition, fees, and books? Looking to get some rough estimates. It seems as though Baptist has contacted everyone they were going to contact.

That is good news that we can buy older book editions, that will help a lot. For those that aren't funded by Baptist, did any of you end up working at Baptist? I live in Winston and Baptist is where I would like to work whether I get funding or not.. which apparently a chance at funding is not looking in my favor right now since I haven't received a phone call

Do we know for sure Baptist has contacted everyone? I thought it was going to be through the end of the week. Also, was anyone told exactly how many are going to be chosen?

And completely off topic, but does anyone know what type of shoes we are required to wear to clinicals? I thought there might be something on sale this weekend.

Thanks for everyone's help.

We have to wear white shoes for clinicals. Many of us wear the typical nursing brands (Danskos and such), but some of us wore white sneakers. They need to be impervious (no Crocs with holes). Hope this helps some!

I don't know for sure if they have contacted everyone but I would think they probably have.. I don't think it would take too long to call 20 people. I am planning on calling Monday if I don't hear anything by then just to make sure, and if I wasn't picked for an interview then I would also like to know the reasoning behind it so I can be better prepared when job searching in the future.

BTW I think they said they were calling 20 people, and only selecting 16 of those people for funding. I know interviews will be going on until mid December and they will make their decision shortly after.

I'm just wondering if anyone can give an insight on how much everything costs: tuition, books, supplies, scrubs, insurance, fees, etc.?
