Thank you for all of this wonderful information! Ive been to Chicago multiple times and just fall in love the more I go. The hospital I currently work at is one of the largest in the state and receives some of the most sick patients in the region, so I want to remain in an environment like that.

I feel your pain with MedSurg- I did most of my clinical rotations in nursing school on the MedSurg floors in my hospital. Between the patient population and the staff I encountered during my experience, I immediately knew MedSurg was not for me. I went to work on a post-interventional cardiac floor and am so thankful I did! I have learned so much more than just cardiac-related nursing knowledge, and do not feel as though I missed out because I chose to avoid MedSurg. Just from my experience, the Psych unit, although it is a new grad position, may be interested in your application for many reasons. It would cost the unit far less to train an experienced nurse than a new grad RN. Your background in MedSurg would definitely not harm your chances in my opinion either. Many psych patients have multiple co-morbidities that you will know how to manage. Stay positive and follow your dreams! The longer you stay in a position where you come home miserable every night, the quicker that you will become burnt out!

I have experienced a patient's family member recording my every move from speaking about non-medical topics with the patient, to simply administering PO medications. I felt as though this was done out of hostility, as to try and find a small flaw in my practice and turn it into a lawsuit down the road if something was to happen to the patient. I am confident I did nothing wrong, but felt violated as a healthcare professional. It would be one thing to record my discharge teaching with the patient, but recording my every move felt quite intrusive. I went to the charge nurse after this happened, and simply asked the family to let me know if and when I was being recorded. Once I requested their notice first, they put their phones away for good.

I am currently a post-interventional cardiac/telemetry RN in North Carolina. I want to relocate to Chicago to work once I have two full years experience under my belt, probably closer to June of 2016. I have worked on the same unit at a large Level 1 trauma hospital since graduating from school and am nervous to make such a big change. I wanted to get some advice about which hospitals are the best to work for, as well as some good nursing agencies in Chicago to go through for applying for jobs. I want to do a contract and have noticed that travel agencies do not have many available Chicago jobs. Any advice about hospitals, agencies, great neighborhoods/suburbs to relocate to would be greatly appreciated!

I believe that everyone is interviewed for Baptist funding. Last year, I think we all had an interview minus a couple of people. I do remember hearing one of my classmates say they never contacted her for an interview, and she is an in-state student. If Baptist does not contact you, I would highly suggest contacting the HR department and making sure you get an interview. As for what Baptist covers, they pay for tuition and books. You do not receive a living stipend, so I have had to take out a substantial amount of loans for rent, bills, and living expenses. They also pay for various fees such as the ATI fee and for NCLEX prep classes this year. However, that could change. Every year, they have offered funding to less students or have decreased the amount of expenses that they cover. They chose 16 of us from this years cohort to be funded.

Hello brave WSSU ABSN students, Congratulations on your acceptance! I am currently in the ABSN program and about to graduate in February. As far as the schedule goes, be prepared to be busy with class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and have clinical on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. We usually have Sundays and Mondays off. ATI is a testing program that you will use throughout the nursing program, and it is mandatory that you get it. As for the Baptist interview, the people interviewing you are looking for a few things: 1. They want to know that you are interested in living in Winston Salem (or commuting to Winston Salem) after graduating from the nursing program. If you tell them you want to move to XYZ state after graduation and work, they will probably not hire you. 2. If you go into the interview and immediately tell them you want to work on a unit that Baptist does not provide (such as labor and delivery) they will probably not choose you. 3. They ask you a lot of situational questions such as about conflict in the workplace and how you have dealt with it in the past. I would be prepared to answer such type of questions quickly. 4. Honestly, I think they like to choose candidates that are very open to possible floors they could work on. I told them I was open to almost any floor they wanted to put me on, and I think that worked to my benefit. Honestly, the only way my cohort is surviving this program is through the advice we received from the group that went before us. Feel free to ask any questions you may have because this program is INSANELY disorganized and they do not tell you much information before you even get to orientation. As for anyone needing to move to the Winston Salem area, let me know if you need help on good places to live or good areas of Winston! Get ready everyone, your lives are about to change a whole lot come January!!

I didn't even receive a phone call or email letting me know I could RSVP to this. I am so excited for this program but feel like I have been in the dark on so much information that I need. I live in the Wilmington area and received my acceptance package on Friday afternoon, so anyone who lives in GSO/Winston Salem should receive correspondence on Monday at the latest. I hope you all find out soon, I was anxiety-ridden all week!
