Would a person like me have a chance to finish the nursing program?

Published

Hello Everyone,

I got accepted into the nursing program for fall of 2016, and I've been feeling very pessimistic when it comes to succeeding. Don't get me wrong, I do want to be a nurse and desire it with all my heart. But I just don't know if I am smart enough to finish the program successfully.

Here is a bit of my background:

~I have completed all my general ed., my nursing prereqs., and all my bachelor classes (except the ones in the program)

~my prereqs. gpa is 3.5 but my overall is 3.3

~I didn't pass my teas test the first time by 3 questions,

then got a 62.8% the second time (I needed at least a 58% to pass).

~I am bilingual

~I do have minor test anxiety

~I have a bit of a medical background (certified medical assistant)

From everything I have mentioned, do I have a chance of finishing the nursing program? I just need to hear words of encouragement; I'm too hard on myself.

Thank you everyone! :)

what do you mean?

I did ask for encouragement (read the last sentence, just because it doesn't have "stories/words" it kind of goes without saying.)

Thank you for your input about my attitude, but you doesn't know me to say that. One comment doesn't say much except for the fact that I am an honest person and doesn't sugar coat anything. I believe a nurse should have a soft heart for people who are down, in pain in any way…etc (I practice that as a MA). I thought many people here would understand because of their nursing experiences, but I know better.

Have a good day :)

BuckyBadger likely meant that you're not the first, nor will you be the last new poster to bite the hand that fed you. You were, however, the quickest (so far) to get all riled up when someone answered your questions honestly but the answers weren't to your liking.

You might very well retain your position as first, though. It would be hard to beat just the one post before you got mean.

No, I doesn't [sic] know you, but I think it's ironic that you "doesn't sugar coat anything" yet your beef with the first answer was that they didn't sugar coat it.

Also, please use the quote feature, bottom right of the post.

thank you for telling me about that quote feature. Thought I could press reply :,D but it wasn't posting where I wanted it to.

Specifically, the "I'm glad you're not my nurse/I'd never want you as my nurse".

I agree, I was having a very blue night and only soaked in the negative from that first comment.

Thank you for bringing that to the light :)

Haha yes, I can agree. I would make an awful nurse. Need to go through the nursing program first and not have myself those few very blue days get in the way.

OP, yes nursing school is tough. It is supposed to be. That being said, grades aren't the only factor in being successful. Drive, staying focused on your studies, and building critical thinking skills are important, too. I have seen students with excellent grades and test scores fail miserably because a sense of entitlement or an inability to apply the knowledge they learn in class to real life.

As per previous posters, if you have some anxiety now, get some help before you start school, and build up your support systems. You will need them!

Thank you! This is exactly what I wanted to hear.

I could be the meanest critic when it comes to my life.

Why do you need "words of encouragement" ? This smacks of insecurity and needing validation. If you want to be a nurse then do it. I have no clue whether you can do it. I have met brainiacs who have quit nursing school and I have met so-so students who worked their rears off and are great nurses. Nursing school is same as anything else. You do it or you do not do it.

Absolutely. I was a GED no high school ed student and I graduated with a 3.9. I worked hard. That is all it takes.
