I just received a job at my local hospital as a NA2. I was super excited about receiving it until I found out that I have to complete a full 2 days of orientation. In order to do this I am going to have to miss my first day of class (am going into my 3rd out of 4 semesters). I keep wondering is it worth missing this day? I had applied for the job at the beginning of July and thought if I received the job I would have plenty of time before school to get everything in order, but they just called and offered me the job yesterday. It is a very part-time position just 12 hours a week so I thought it would be perfect for school and help me get my foot in the door of the hospital. It is known that the hospital offers new RN jobs to their current NA staff that has completed school. Am so worried that I will miss super important info on the first day.
There was a guy in my clinical group who missed I believe a clinical day to go on an interview, he spoke with his teachers who encouraged him to go so he could hopefully be hired and be able to network. I certainly think its worth discussin with your instructors. Best of luck!
Since you emailed the instructor and she said you won't get in trouble, I would miss a day of class. Seems worth it to have a job in a hospital and get your foot in the door.
There is no way I would miss a school day for orientation for a part-part-time job. At the nursing school I attended, you could only miss 2 days thru-out your entire program, period. You might, or might not, be offered a job there after graduation. If you miss school, you might miss something that will "make or break" your grade.
I would miss the day. The first day is usually orientation and to be honest you will probably just go over the syllabus/class policies. Talk to your instructor and get a friend to tell you about the day.. Jobs in the hospitals are hard to come by.
I'd say check with both your instructor and the contact person at the new job. Explain your situation and how very much you need this job to pay your bills. If you don't have clinical on that first day, if you can live with losing some points (maybe) it might well be doable.
I'd absolutely miss class. Go to work. It's not like your missing class to go to the pool! You're still doing something nursing related that will benefit your career. Just email your instructor and let them know.
Was too excited to missed first day which is usually Theory (lecture). If it's a theory class i'd talk to the teacher and explain. Then just make copies of lecture notes missed that day from your classmates
I can't believe how lenient these comments are about just skipping class. When I was in nursing school, we could only miss 2 days, period, throughout the entire program. I personally wouldn't want to miss one single thing that could make or break it for me.
It is only one day and hospital jobs are so hard to come by with no experience. I would miss it. Let your instructor know. On the other hand this one hospital wanted to hire me as a PCT but I would have had to miss a whole week of school so i declined. If it was one day I would have no issue with it. look at it this way, I doubt they are going to give you a quiz on the very first day (I hope they wouldn't:wacky:)
Yikes! Ok that is why I did not want to miss a week of school. I could deal with missing clinical and writing a 500 page assignment but missing quizzes would pretty much set me up for failure in an 8-week 300 point class.

Do you have a friend that can record the lecture? I was once in the same situation - but instead of the first day, it was a test day. Per my school's policy, I would lose 5% if I took it the day after. It was a hard decision, but I ultimately did the job orientation. In my case, it was worth it, and I still don't regret it.
Check your school's policy first, though.
