Would you trade...Work 8 am to 5 pm 30 points a week, 40 hours

FOR.... 8-3, 32 hours, 24 points

apx $17,000 less a year

(Points is home health system/ per visit you do ie 2.5 points for a start up or intake, 1.5 points for recertifying or intake a patient just out of the hospital, 1 point for a repeat visit etc...)

Curious for your thoughts...

Probably not.  Because of my work style and habits, I'd probably end up working the same amount of hours I am currently right now, so for me, there would be no incentive to take a pay cut...

It would be a trade off. What would you want to do with that extra time, and what could you not do without the income? I had to go from 36 to 32 hours this past fall to finish school. For me the trade off was well worth it. Now that I've finished school I can pick up extra hours and luckily for me they are now overtime, so time and a half for four hours to work the same shifts I used to. So in effect I gave myself a raise, as long as I don't work only my scheduled hours. It also dropped me from full time to part time for benefits, though, so I am paying a little more each pay period for that. Good luck with your decision.

Thank you for commenting JBMmom! I am really glad it worked out for you!?

I went to per diem agency work so I could make the same amount and work less, and pick my hours.

I was working a ridiculous amount, suffering from burn out, not having a good work/life balance.

In the end it depends on what you want for yourself. I would find a way to work less if it meant having a better life, being able to have hobbies and enjoy time with friends and family. I'm not in this to live just to work.

When I went from 40 hours to 32, the extra day off made a big difference for my mental health. Of course do the financial calculations and make sure you can afford it. As long as it won't affect your ability to pay for rent, food, gas, etc, see what you would have to miss out on and decide if it's worth it = )And look into why you are considering cutting back. Mental health, more time with family, time to exercise...?

There is actually a pre-retirement scheme in France where in your last year you can choose to work at 80% hours but receive 90% salary. As I approach retirement age this is something I am giving very serious consideration.

Although theoretically, in extended care home health, one can make a unique schedule to work as long as the client agrees, my employer is not very receptive to the idea.  They would rather the employee not work at all than to accommodate them.

No!  I am a weekend option RN and work F/S/S (for about 6 years now). Everyone asks me why I don't go to the clinics or some other M-F 9-5 job. One, I drive 45 mi one way to work. I like working 3 days. I would probably have to take greater than 30% decrease in pay. Love what I do and still like the weekends.
