Would you give birth at the hospital where you work?

Published

Why or why not?

The insurance plan offered at my hospital isnt the greatest at all...for hospitalization it is $250/day plus 20% if I stay within the specific hospital network...with a 50% discount if I deliver at the hospital where I work and pay the balance within 30 days of the bill. If I stay within network but outside the hospital system, its $500/day and 40% copay. Get this, if I go out of network, its a 60% copay! If it werent for the discount, I would be against it, simply because for one thing I just dont know how comfortable I would be with the situation. I currently work on med/surg as a new grad and eventually I would love to switch to mother/baby. Im not sure if me being a patient there could help or hurt me getting a job there. Plus its just the whole privacy issue. Its a very small community hospital.

How would you feel about having your baby where you work?

Yes I did. I was a student at the time but now I'm employed there and still would deliver there though it would feel wierd to have my coworkers checking my fundus and bleeding but what the heck LOL! Might as well!

I did three times, it was great AND I worked in the OB/GYN dept while I did. I knew all the nurses, MD's, residents, everyone personally and I think it was even better because of that. I got to pick who assisted during my c/s, and the residents stayed away b/c they knew me, so they were like, I'm here if your doc needs help. The nurses were great, I had no problem with 'being the pt', I'm pretty ok w/ letting it all hang out when its about getting this baby outta me, I'm also not self conscience re breastfeeding and such, maybe if I were a private person it would, but everyone I have ever worked with ;nurses, residents(female) and the male residents wives ALL delivered there and no one had any problem. It also helps we are a big teaching hospital with a lg high risk pop and NICU that people transfer and fly into for care so we really wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

HE double L NO! The maternity unit at our small community hospital is called the lady partsl bypass unit. In addition to all the usual ICU stuff I have to do at the job, we have to recover their C sections. I have not been impressed at all. To me it says something to have a higher c section rate than both the state and US average... both the nurses and the docs need to work on their techniques or something. Its not a high risk hospital.

I would however deliver at a former job which was also at a small community hospital, which I was born at and my mom worked at for 30+ years, but they just seemed a better maternity crew, and of course I knew them better too.

I did deliver both my kids at my place of employment but i was not a nurse yet nor employed at the time.

I would deliver again in a heart beat but the post partum was very undesirable for both deliveries. Facility is great but the staff was not.

The nurses may have changed but I wish I was not so doped up that I could have defended myself better. (at least I was doped for the first delivery; 2nd delivery I was in need of abx and blood post c-section)

no Way, No Way, No Way At All!!!

Nope. First, no private rooms. Second, OBs that use vacuums and forcepts routinely. Third, crazy c sections ie; term baby LGA, comes out 7 pounds and then needs to go to NICU for TTN.

Just knowing what kinds of things are said about patients (opinions) in report, I'm not sure I would be comfortable giving birth in my own unit. But in the past, anytime we had a another staff member or their family member as a patient, everyone went out of their way to give the best care and withhold their opinions (for the most part, lol)

I have delivered all three of mine on my unit (2 in CA, the last in TX). I wouldn't have it any other way. I was especially glad with my last, who was late pre-term and ended up in the NICU for a week with a chest tube. They let me stay the entire time (I was a boarder) and I felt very safe and comfrotable having some of my best friends taking care of my baby.

I have taken care of lots of coworkers, doctors and nurses from our unit and other units in the hospital. I promise you, I don't remember what one of their privates looked like :) The fact that you are a patient there shouldn't have any bearing on your chances of transferring to that unit.

For those of you who work in OB, I cannot imagine working at a hospital that I would not want to give birth in for any reason other than privacy :( I would be looking for a new job ASAP.

I was thinking the same thing.

i did.....3 times, twice for live births, once when i lost the baby. privacy was not something i spent 2 seconds thinking about. they were complete professionals :)

I did not, but it was because I am a military spouse and have Tricare Prime. I lived in a city where there was a large Army hospital. I delivered at the Army hospital, but worked at the civilian hospital in town.

Thanks for your opinions...they have given me more to think about. I really appreciate it.

As someone mentioned earlier about what is given in report,etc...I think that is one of my main worries. Such a small hospital and staff...I would end up meeting most of the nurses I hope to soon by my coworkers if I switch to that unit, except as a patient. So they may form opinions about me as a person before getting to know me as a possible addition to the unit, and passing their opinions about me around in report lol...if that makes sense. Im probably just paranoid, but this is my first child and I suspect that I may not be myself because Im sure its going to be stressful and Ill be anxious and scared lol. Ive also never been in the hospital so I have a lot of fears. Yeah I know I sound like a baby...dont they say nurses/doctors make the worse patients??? lol

Someone mentioned statistics on c-sections,etc...how would I go about finding that type of data on my hospital?
