Would you give birth at the hospital where you work?

Why or why not?

The insurance plan offered at my hospital isnt the greatest at all...for hospitalization it is $250/day plus 20% if I stay within the specific hospital network...with a 50% discount if I deliver at the hospital where I work and pay the balance within 30 days of the bill. If I stay within network but outside the hospital system, its $500/day and 40% copay. Get this, if I go out of network, its a 60% copay! If it werent for the discount, I would be against it, simply because for one thing I just dont know how comfortable I would be with the situation. I currently work on med/surg as a new grad and eventually I would love to switch to mother/baby. Im not sure if me being a patient there could help or hurt me getting a job there. Plus its just the whole privacy issue. Its a very small community hospital.

How would you feel about having your baby where you work?

I gave birth at the hospitals I worked at both times and wouldn't have condidered otherwise. Not only was it where I worked but the DEPT I worked because I worked in L&D. My co-workers took extra special care of me and I trusted them because I had worked with them and knew them to be awesome.

Funny thing that happened though...:chuckle

With my second child...a girl...induced...9LB-4 OZ..rough delivery, no epidural, retained placenta, 3rd degree perineal laceration...urinary retention and a catheter....etc....

The day after I delivered, the nursery had just brought me the baby and I was supposed to give her a bath...I could barely stand up....and in walks my nurse manager with MY EVALUATION that was 6 months late...and telling me I had to sign it right then because I would be out on maternity leave...I didn't even read the DAMN THING...I just signed it...I couldn't believe they would do that....:banghead:

Altoona Hospital in Altoona PA if anyone wants to know...

But my co-workers took good care of me, no complaints about that aspect of it..:redbeathe.

Specializes in L&D!.

The only reason I wouldn't deliver where I work is because I delivered my first at another hospital and I have established care there. My new unit seems great so far, but I've only been there 3 weeks.

I'm due in Oct but am not deliverying at my hospital. I work in a place that boasts the largest # of deliveries in the country so it's highly regarded in the area but is very intervention-driven. Good for a high-risk pregnancy but a bit overkill for a normal delivery. I'm going to a hospital further away that is much more relaxed and has a great staff of midwives and offers waterbirthing. ....Plus I think I'd be a little weird about having people i know check my bleeding and fundus but that's just me.
