Worst potential employer experience ever!!!! Was it ok to call HR and say no thanks?

Published

I have been on the market for a few jobs. Interesting enough I have managed to nail a few interviews with a couple of reputible sources. One I never heard of. I was encouraged to go for the interview at the unheard one. A local IPA.

I was sent and very long application by a harsh sounding young lady on the phone. I filled out the application and went today to a rather nice looking building. I arrived on time. Went to a door that was a "security door" meaning you had to be buzzed in, weird, unsettling, it's a nice area!!

I arrived to the front desk, asked for the gal who was harsh on the phone. Well, she walked up and said to me. "I don't have time to help her, I am busy doing something else for Suzie.. I will take her back to start her typing and 10 keypunch test... she can sit there until they are ready forher! I piped in excuse me? I hope I won't have to wait too long.

I was taken back to a shoddy room, full of 10+ year old computers, holes in the carpet, boxes of files everywhere, and unhappy, rude people who stared at me as I walked by.

I was set up at a computer that was dirty and older than anything i have ever seen. I logged on and was tested on a 10 key punch test. After my second entry, I took my things and walked OUT!

I called HR and explained I was not wishing to meet with them or the medical director of this IPA. They asked why and I told them. I explained I wad treated rudly by "Ivy" at the front door, walked through a room of miserable looking staff, no smiles. or hellos. I stated I am not interested if this is the impression you wish your IPA to portray to new hires.

I was so mad.... grant it, I know how hard it is to find a case manager, an RN with many years experience. You think they'd try better. Horrible.

Was it ok to let HR know why I was cancelling my appt and why I walked OUT?

I think you handled it well. I would have done the same thing. Bottom line is, because of their unprofessional-ism they caused you a wasted trip, wasted gas, wasted time, etc.

I couldn't take this seriously after the complaint that no one smiled at you.

I don't think you did anything wrong at all. I probably would have let HR know that the rudeness and unprofessionalism deterred me from completing the process too.

I think you did the right thing. Perhaps the higher ups have no idea this is going on. And as far as this person having a bad day, she was both rude on the phone and in person. These post that excuse this because she might be having a bad day is just making excuses. Yes we all have bad days, but why should that make it ok to be rude to other people? Leave your problems at the door and pick them up on the way out.

I guess I didn't make it clear. People were busy. But they looked like they were miserable... I mean frowns all around. Tension you could cut with a knife. I was taken into a small room.. I mean small. I had to sit a few feet away from a couple of miserable looking people. An asian man and a latina woman. I smiled and greeted them... no response. So maybe this makes a difference in your opinion. I was ignored.

I will also say this was a pretty diverse ethnic cross section of people so I am sure my race had nothing to do with it.

Bad impression? yes.. reportable rudeness? yes.. I didn't mention to HR about the holes in the dirty carpet, or the torn wallpaper. But if they can't afford t at least maintain a basic work environment, I doubt they can afford a new RN case manager with 18 years experience.

I have to assume that since you are asking the question you are not quite sure you did the right thing... no matter though... they wasted your time by not taking you seriously as an applicant. So they get what they get... maybe your response will help them out somehow...

I would have done the same thing OP. If I can't tolerate the environment long enough to finish the interview process, then what's the point of proceeding.

Okay so you have concluded you wouldn't want to work for this company. What did you expect? Greeted with a plate of warm cookies? I've never expected staff to take time from their busy work day to greet the interviewee. Especially with different cultures you have to understand they don't all share our (Americans) social norms. Maybe they also were stressed because they were working close to a deadline?

I personally wouldn't get my knickers in such a twist over a job I didn't want. Put that energy into finding a job you don't find sketchy.

wow, some of the responses floor me. The attitude of "what do you want a medal?' This forum is usually ok with venting. The OP is just describing what she experienced. I was treated like this once on a ICU interview but that I can understand..stuff goes down. A Case Mgr of 18 years knows she deserves better. The receptionist is the face of the company, the first person I meet. I would want to know if she was not just a little terse but a real turd to a potential employee.

It's very callous to think that a case manager of 18 yrs should deserve better .

A seasoned nurse does not deserve better tx than any other potential employee being interviewed IMHO.

The OP asked if we thought what she did was OK. If the OP didn't want opinions the OP should not have posted this on an internet forum.

I can understand the OP not wanting to work there. I get that, been there done it..I would have skipped out on the interview too. What I don't get is her response. I believe it's a little over the top too. Obviously some people have been very sheltered or have been living under a rock to not see what the economy has done to some companies hanging on by a thread. This place she interviewed sounds typical of an inner city office with underpaid employees who aren't paid enough to give a rat's orifice. Maybe some people need a job so bad they don't care how they're treated.

If only I had a $1 for each instance I've been treated rudely whether it be by a potential employer or as a paying customer.....

OP, if you don't like the vibe, how you are treated, what ever the case may be you can decide to just turn and leave. If you don't feel like explaining, that's fine too.

Nobody is going to care either way, tho. That is how bad things have got. You will not enlighten or spur change. They will ALWAYS fill that position - of course, usually it will be a revolving door at places like that, but, usually they are fine with that.

I got up and walked out of two interviews because I didn't like the answers or attitudes from the person interviewing me. There is not reason to waste everyone's time when you know it isn't going to fit.
