Working Full time through Full time LPN School. Crazy right?!

Published

Hello friends,

So, I am working full time 8-5. I have a 5 year old, btw. I want to start LPN school in August. I would be at LPN school 6-10pm for 14 months. Is it crazy?

I wanted to do this LPN prog because I have to wait a whole academic year before I can start RN school. (RN school is at a Community College so I may not even be accepted, but maybe as an LPN I would have a better chance.)

Advice please!

Specializes in ICU.

You can do it, it's absolutely doable. But don't try to be the best at everything. You won't be spending much time with your kid this year, don't feel guilty about it, you're doing this for him/her also.

If you feel like there's too much destruction at home, go somewhere else to study - Souplantation worked for me (also free wi-fi) or Starbucks, library, etc.

If you're cooking at home, you might switch to take out for most days.

Basically, you won't be spending much time with friends, family, relatives etc. Be prepared to be BLAMED for ignorance, nobody will understand except for those who've been through nursing school. If you're planning to do your RN, you need better grades not just passing, keep that in mind!

Study hard, read the material, DO NOT READ THROUGH, read all of it.

Passing tests are very rewarding, so it's not all bad :D

Good luck!

I'm working full time, going to school full time and I have my fiancé and our 3.5 year old AND I'm pregnant ... I want to cry everyday haha. It's hard, my fiancé feels neglected. I miss my son alllll the time. And I'm exhausted 100%. My LPN course is only 12 months. So it's very hard and condensed. I'm half way thru. We graduate in December. My school however gets to do clinical on mother baby, pediatrics and the emergency department. It's hard, but you can do it. Nothing is impossible if you have the drive to push you.

I am looking to go this route as well. Financially sound for me at this point since I as well have 5 year old child. I'm planning to enter the program spring 2016.

Whatever your decision just be positive about it and and understand the sacrifice you will be giving up such as quality time, and social life.

Wishing you luck in your future endeavors.

My peer did she worked three jobs while in school one full one part time and the other contingent it's possible and she is married with two kisa

Even though this sounds challenging I would go for it. The worst that can happen is you cant handle the hours and would have to drop down to part time or find another job.

Have you looked into student loans to help with some of your bills? I am a single parent also and was in the same situation. I worked full time my first semester in nursing school and did very well. In fact I did better than I had done in college when I did not work. Emotionally it was hard but I got through it. The next semester I took out loans and moved to part time. Talk about less stressful. :)

Whatever you decide, good luck!

I am looking to start going to school for LPN in Oct and I have 6 kids. I work during the day and will go to school M-Th 6-10:30.

I am prepared to not spend a lot of time with my family. I know in the long run it will payoff. I have support from my spouse. Not to mention I work from home. My youngest is 4. The hard thing is I will not be home for homework, but I am implementing a plan to have my kids leave their homework out so I can double check. I know my husband will make sure it's done but I want to still be involve.

Hi, anyone work 16 hour shifts while going to school full time? I am thinking of adding 4 extra hours . Currently in a lvn program full time and work 12 hours on Saturday but want to start doing 16 hour shifts. my only dilemma would learn how to keep up with the readings because just one chapter is close to 65 pages.

little tips with time management :

this level I will start on using a crock pock on Sunday to cook a 5-day meal for the week. cook more chicken/turkey , poultry, salmon, fermented veggies, brown rice, big salad mostly) bone broth daily. save time on doing my hair I wear a wig. easy and quick. I bought a husky lunch bag from home depot that holds 6 containers (which is 3 meals) and a water bottle...last level I was eating junk food and not eating healthy...stomach was all messed up so this level before I go back Monday its alkaline/paleo diet and fresh juices hydrated fruits for energy. :)

Nope, you got this!!!! I was told from the 1st day of class till the end that I couldn't do. I worked Monday through Friday and went to school Monday through Saturday. I don't have children, but it was incredibly tough. I was up 19-20 hours a day, but I just finished my last semester and I passed ALL my classes!!!!! I'm saying this to say it can be done!!!! Stay positive, pray, and keep the faith!!!!
