I am excited about starting nursing school (LPN) but I have NO DESIRE at all to work in a nursing home. I want to either work in ER, L&D, or a OB/GYN practice. Am I going to be stuck in ltc? I'm in the state if virginia.
Have been LPN for almost 8yrs.I work as a Private Duty Nurse in Ny. Have been for about last 4.5yrs, also home care field. Have done 1yrmed/surg right out of nursing school for the experience......I must say I love the one on one care the best.:) HAve done stints with staffing agencies in LTC.......that was kind of stressful due to all the responsibility they put on you....being charge with no experience threw me for a loop! LOL Would love to get into travel nursing, my youngest graduates in 2 yrs.........hubby can retire from corrections in 9. We are ready to move away from the COLD!!! There are lots of LPN opportunities, you just have to keep looking!! Thought about the RN route......even did some college courses and online stuff..............but I love what I do as an LPN. Make good $$ Private Duty too..and less stress!!
I'm an LPN in Indiana...I work in a hosp. on the med/surg floor...I start IV's, hang blood, and do IV pushes. I admit pts. discharge, and tranfer pts.but I need an RN to co-sign on admissions to the unit..otherwise there is no diference at the hospital where i work at on the med/surg floor except the salary...LPN's can only work post-partum on the OB unit...No LPN's on ccu..but there are LPN in ER and out pt surgery...Lpn's can work home-heath and hsopice in Indiana..But if you want to be a OB nurse go on to be an RN especially if you want to work nicu...good luck...
Hi!
I work in a pediatricians office and just LOVE the job. Most of my friends work in LTC but one works with hospice and another works in a rehab/subacute facility. I, too, felt like you do. I didn't want to work in LTC at all and was afraid that it would be all I could find when I graduated. But it wasn't. Look around and NETWORK all the time. There are plenty of other jobs out there that are not LTC.
Oh, and I live in Ohio.
I work in a hospital childbirth center doing postpartum mother-baby and since we are a small hospital and don't have a fully staffed OR 24/7, I also scrub in for unplanned and emergency c-sections. I worked in a nursing home doing first LTC then medicare for a year, and I would really did not like it. I actually make more per hour (after shift diff) at the hospital, not to mention much better benefits and added perks. They are paying for me to get my RN too!

I am a LPN that does Travel Nursing. I have been an LPN for 17 years and I find the current staffing trend is that LPN's are not treated as a "Real Nurse" yes..that's RN. As a career nurse that cares about the quality of care offered to Pt's I am disturbed. I have worked in most states in most areas..most problems are the same in any setting..plenty of $ for management, minimal staff, poor retention and recruitment..it all adds up to poor patient care my dear..whever your at..LTC,Hospitals,clinics. It is my hope that being a new nurse you also become active in helping to change the current system that is dictated by the all mighty dollar.Join the professional nursing organizations(a few don't recognize LPN's)
By the way as a LPN the 1st 10 years of my career was in Maternal/Child health.I am a level2 NICU nurse, work PICU ocaasionally and still do OB.My advice is take PCEP and NRP for proper training.I have found that continuing education has knocked down obstacles for an LPN.Good Luck
