do any of you work in anything other than ltc as an LPN?

Published

I am excited about starting nursing school (LPN) but I have NO DESIRE at all to work in a nursing home. I want to either work in ER, L&D, or a OB/GYN practice. Am I going to be stuck in ltc? I'm in the state if virginia.

I don't mean to sound sarcastic or anything, but if you plan on being a nurse, read what you just said and think about it. To be a nurse, you go to nursing school. However, to be a good nurse you have to be caring, have empathy and not have an attitude. You have a choice to where you want to work, but no matter where you choose, remember, to be a good nurse is to be caring. One day someone you know or yourself will need some kind of care. Be open minded ok?

I don't think what she wrote was uncaring nor do I think it is a reflection of the type of nurse one will be.....nursing is a wide field and it is perfectly ok to state what area interests you or what area you know you don't want to work. Actually, that is good to have an idea of where you want to head. I have been in nursing for several years now--CNA=7years, LPN=10 years, RN=1 year. I can surely say that I don't like doing adult nursing and that LTC is not my cup of tea....and this has no bearing on the level of care I provide. This is a personal choice and in no way is a reflection of my care or how I feel about others who choose something different than my choice. I think you also need to be open minded.

I think that you will find the right area of nursing as time goes by. I have been an LPN since 1975. i worked, ER, ICU CCU and transferred to the OR. I loved my job. I also worked recently in assisted living. I loved all my residents. They were beautiful, So you will be just fine, Nursing is caring.

Hi I am a new LPN and I work in a step down unit for Cardiothoracic/Telemetry I find it very informativr and I am soooooo excited

Howdo small world! I've been a lpn for five years. There is something else.ltc is ok if that's what's open. dream big check into community nursing, or hospice or mabey homecare. I myself work in ID.I love it.

UMMM...Maybe you should take your own advice. Nowhere in her post was she uncaring, and if anyone comes off as having an attitude it is YOU!! I have worked in LTC for 18 years as a CNA and I KNOW I don't want to work in LTC when I'm done with school. I accepted a job at a hospital and look forward to the new change!! SO PARDON ME If THAT makes me uncaring or shows that I have no empathy or an attitude.

What is ID?

ID = Infectious Disease OR Intellegent Design........ depends on the topic......LOL

I have been an LVN for 30 years - I have worked in Blood Banking as a Pherisis Nurse( 7 years), Forensic Nursing doing HIV/TB program for the county Jail, I did Quality Management / Process Improvement for 8 years, I have done Marketing for LTC (my fav job), LTC,Urgent Care, clinics, Asst DON, DON (upon graduation - that shows my age!!) Plasma Physician Sub/Asst Director, and now I'm doing Immunizations ( I have 2 clinics) with Health Dist. I have had great jobs - truth is I never really worked as a nurse on the floors except when I was in the military. I have found that if I see a job that I know I could do and feel I could be an assest - I apply - I have had more RN slots than I care to mention. It's not always about licensure - often it's about ability - when it says RN - If I have the experience and the know how I apply. I cost less - bigger bang for the buck - never be afraid to try - you might be surprised at how many jobs ask for degrees but really they want interest and committment.

I love Long Term Care and in no way consider myself "stuck there". I choose to be there. Our geriatric pts. have the same needs as younger ones, and deserve to have good nurses who care for them and do not feel "stuck". However to answer your question, I do not know about Virgina but around here you can pretty much work anywhere you want. I do not mean to sound a little angry, I am just trying to put to rest the thought that nurses work in Long Term Care because they have no where else to go. I get that a lot from people (nurses included) that just do not understand why I do it. :)

The person you were replying to was honest about where they wanted to work and where they didn't. I see no reason why the heck they got such a lecture.

I worked 11 years in LTC as an aide, and KNEW i didn't want to work in LTC as a nurse. Maybe i'll change my mind later, but for now, i'm still burnt out on it.

Specializes in Geriatrics, acute hospital care, rehab.

I've been at the University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview for 8 1/2 years now. Started out in the medical float pool for one year, then moved to the acute rehab department for four years (then they closed it) moved over to geriatric psych unit for two years, then UMMC decided to re-open the acute rehab unit again so now I've been back here for over a year! WHEW....hope I can just stay put now LOL:clown:
