will universal healthcare ( in the usa) cut RN pay?

Published

I been hearing this debate off and on for a long time about how if Obama gets universal healthcare to go ( if he gets elected of course)though in the US that nursing pay will be cut dramatically. I would think this has to do with the fact that we would all be working for the government and that there will no longer be competition. There are many people in my nursing class that said they will leave nursing if thats the case. I also talked to several doctors that said the same thing about medicine in general. Im just curious if anyone has some good info about this. Thanks

I suppose I should have quoted the poster but I was responding to Krisi's comment that we aren't a socialist society.

I'm not talking about the health dept, which is what you described around here. Walk in clinics, urgent care facilities, "doc in a box", and other nick names is what I'm talking about.

I'm not saying that just because I can do it so can everyone else. I could never expect others to live up to my example, I set the bar way too high. (J/K)

I agree that we will all be cut down to a common denominator. This will include doctors also, but what of the private sector that all universal health care countries have? Or is this a myth? I have had friends who have had to be treated in other countries, they say that if you can't pay the BIG bucks then you are like everyone else. I am tired of those who are all about me. We need to find some common ground again and try working for the ones who pay their fair share. Middle class, as for care only in the ER I disagree, in the facility that I work in, we give the same care no matter how rich or how poor a person is, since when is it a practice to know if someone is wealthy or a vagrant?:smokin:

I would just like to say "GOOD RIDDANCE!" If you became a nurse to be rich and not to help the ill then get out now, those nurses and physicians are the reason bed side manner is so bad now. Yes, our pay might decrease but healthcare for the sick and uninsured will be better. We are the only country that does not take responsibility for our neighbors. How many patients do we see in a day that have multiple problems that have gotten worse because they did not have healthcare. I say to nurse/physicians who are worried about the amount of money they are going to be making- PICK A NEW CAREER!!!!!! Those of us who are here to actually help heal the sick and weak-- DON'T NEED YOU!!! This is just my opinion but it hurts my heart when we live in a place that would rather watch people suffer then stand up for those who are less fortunate than us.:prdnrs:

I work in EMS at my other job, I have spoken to individuals from England, who have come here for MRI's and other tests. Many of these tests especially for cancer patients can take months to get. Several of the individuals I have spoken with have sold everything, and flew here for treatment and will not return to England, they gained employment here. They have said that even though it is expensive to get insurance in the US it is still far better han socialized medicine.

Nods, when it comes down to it, I have my own insurance, my own disability, and take care of all my other issues.

I can see CRNA's argument. My brother is one of those slacker, leech, junkie types. It irks me to no end.

However, there are people out there that are not able to get the things they need. Sometimes it's due to financial reasons or mental reasons or something else. They DO need help. It doesn't have to be 'social' medicine BUT the current system needs to at least get a major upgrade...

acutally RN nurses in Europe gets paid more than in the USA, places like the scandinavian nations (high taxes in excess of 55% or maybe more, with universal healthcare and more)

We are the only country that does not take responsibility for our neighbors.

This is the best quote ever!!!

We can spend BILLIONS on foreign countries but help other Americans??? Oh no... we can't do that.

How about we upgrade healthcare a bit and use those funds we send to foreign countries on our own people...

Those 55% tax rates are NOT due to the universale health care. It's due to the fact that EVERYTHING is socialized...

Sorry for slightly off topic (as far as issue of RN pay)

Thoughts?

A 30 year old single woman who doesn't make enough to support herself sure shouldn't be getting pregnant. Her lack of personal responsibility doesn't entitle her to anything, in my mind, except maybe a 2nd job.

Pregnancy isn't some disease she catches off of a dirty commode seat.

BabyRN: Your son is free to go to work for an employer who offers health care coverage. We don't allow indentured servitude in this country anymore.

May we all pray that some day this is not your daughter we are talking about because then where will you be!! People make mistakes and even the best birth control fails. And before you say "she shouldn't be having sex" Pay attention in class and go back to your Maslow heirarchy of needs.

I would just like to say "Great Topic" Everyone really feels strongly about this issue and that's what it is all about. It even has drawn out other topics related to the lack of healthcare that people feel strong about. So thank for posting it!!!!!

Please do not get me wrong, I am a nurses aide and am studying to be a nurse. I am a firm believer in care more not pay more. I do all that I can to see that patients get a fair shake. The current system needs a major overhauling!!!! I do not know if socialized is the best, I think that there must be a happy medium between the two. Sorry if anyone took what I said wrong.:bowingpur

Agreed. The current system does need an upgrade that we can agree on.

Now I do believe that most of the people on WELFARE are making a choice to be on welfare. They have other options but it's easier to sit at home and get a paycheck than to work for one. They've learned the loopholes and use them to their advantage.

Maybe I am lucky to have so many call centers around but we have over 10 in the Knoxville area. I work at the lowest paying one and it starts out at $8 an hour. ANYONE can do it and we hire just about anyone that can pass an EASY test and a drug test. Hospitals have so many entry level positions, sure they aren't the most glorified but it pays decently and has good benefits. If you choose to work a job that doesn't provide insurance then that is a choice you make. Someone said that someone has to do the jobs. That's true but there are insurance options out there but people don't want to pay for them. If the bartender takes a portion of his tips every night and puts them away, he could afford to have individual insurance through BCBS or another carrier. I think MOST people who don't have insurance it's because they haven't made it a priority, they don't think they need it until they need it and then they cry and want the government to pay for their expenses.

Talking about this in a forum is irrelavant. Try calling and writing a "real letter," to your congressman. However, I'm not sure more bureaucracy will provide a solution.
