Will the economy ever get better so less people will pursue nursing?

Published

Competiton is too much. It's the same at every school. When will this go away? I'm so frustrated!

Yes. If you think only way out of minimum wage is nursing.

The other careers in healthcare don't pay as good as nursing except for a doctor. What are some other careers where you can make similar pay as RN?

To the OP- I'm not following why you think the economy turning around will lead to nursing schools lowering their standards. Most higher education programs have standards that candidates need to meet to be accepted. If a candidate cannot score high enough on the entrance exams, they will not be admitted. I have yet to come across a program that changes its standards based on how the economy is doing. Nursing was competitive before the economy tanked and remains competitive now. I do not think the competition will go away when/if the economy rebounds.

How about Bio-Medical Engineer, Physician's Assistant or Pharmacist? Those are all medical and pay more than nurses?

If those are "over your head" and you can't get into a RN program right away work toward Respiratory Therapy or even Laborary technician type courses. At least you're working in the hospital field and gathering valuable skills. You can earn a decent salary too.

I live in an area known as the "Eastern Shore" of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. We still have nurse jobs available here for decent pay and in a very beautiful mid-Atlantic area of the country (between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay).

I'm sorry that so many of you are having trouble finding jobs and seem so angry with "nursing" in general. I've been a nurse for over 25 years. My RN license has always helped me provide for my family and earn a decent living. The has always been ups and downs in the job market and the overall economy is terrible right now, but it will turn around again.

Good Luck to those of you who continue to stuggle.

If you're interested in something health-related there are still other fields you could pursue:

Public Health

Optometry

Healthcare Management

Dietitian

Nutritionist

Dental Hygenist

Physical Therapist

Occupational Therapist

Massage Therapist

None of those require a masters degree.

so since I can't get a good TEAS score that means I will be stuck making minimum wage for the rest of my l ife

It means that you need to identify the weaknesses that are causing the low score, whether it is knowledge, comprehension or test taking skills and study to overcome that. If others can pass the test, so can you.

She did! She said it was reading.

And I'm curious if she's actually making minimum wage right now or just being dramatic

Yes...they do. Physical Therapy, Ocuupational therapy, Optometry...those require a Master's.

OP, have you tried TEAS textbooks? Studying in groups? Or taking some classes? My school doesn't require the TEAS, so I can't really help. But if you are only interested in becoming an RN for the money, I would strongly encourage you to look elsewhere.

to the OP have you considered Private programs? they tend to accept more students and are not as competitive (but still competitive) as public CC or University programs.. it all comes with a steep pricetag though...

if your having trouble with the with the TEAS test, keep on practicing...

Do every single TEAS practice exam out there... take them untill you throw up.. then after your done.. take some more..

"

i barely can pass the teas. other schools want a higher reading score and i keep getting the same score each time"

this isn't what you want to hear, but if you can't pass teas and you're broke now, you're going to be far worse off (and in more debt) when you inevitable fail out of nursing school. there are many other things to do with your life than be a nurse (many that pay more than minimum wage). please re-consider before you invest time and (borrowed?) money pursuing a career that it sounds like you are not academically cut out for.

"

alot of schools don't require the teas. another way to get in is to get a bachelors degree and then apply for the rn program."

accelerated bsn programs are extremely competitive, and expensive. your college gpa better be exceptional. if this person is broke now, a 4-year unrelated ba and then an expensive absn probably aren't the way to go.

"how about bio-medical engineer, physician's assistant or pharmacist?"

this person can't pass the nursing school entrance exam - she's not going to be accepted to a program for something even higher level and more competitive, like pa or pharmd. she needs to be realistic and look at completely different careers.

hello common sense! how are you?

i have to laugh (and cringe) when people suggest pa or pharmacist. as hard as nursing school is, all three of those fields are much harder than nursing!

i would suggest going into something like teaching or a trade like plumber, electrician, or a mechanic. those jobs pay handsomely, i might add (not the teacher, but the trades).

when people are flunking the entrance exams multiple times, i have to think that they just aren't cut out for the field either.
