Will the economy ever get better so less people will pursue nursing?

Published

Competiton is too much. It's the same at every school. When will this go away? I'm so frustrated!

Yeah, I'm grateful RN schools are competitive. I can appreciate your difficulty but I'm happy for the patients. If reading is your problem, then you will struggle to comprehend the loads of textbooks nursing school requires you to read. You're not supposed to be able to "buy" a degree. In many cases, students get financial aid anyway.

If you're interested in something health-related there are still other fields you could pursue:

Public Health

Optometry

Healthcare Management

Dietitian

Nutritionist

Dental Hygenist

Physical Therapist

Occupational Therapist

Massage Therapist

I did well in all my pre reqs. I can read very well

Interestingly enough, we don't want people to stop pursuing nursing. We are facing an impending nursing shortage, what with the large number of nurses soon to be retiring. In fact, studies are suggesting the demand for nurses will exceed supply by 20% in the year 2020. That is HUGE!!

This is the worst line of bull out there, propaganda right from the schools whom reported record profits as flocks of nursing students are hit with the reality of unemployment once they graduate. competition is not always healthy and can be hard on your health with massive stress, life is too short to believe things will bet better soon. flame away,no skin off my nose, And I am bitter as H&ll due to having to relocate 2000 miles away from home to get a decent job with years of experience and BSN. Too many new nurses are painting a sugar coated picture by not telling it like it is out there.

The problem you are facing is related to the lack of nursing professors and/or the lack of space in hospitals, which limits the number of students they can take. All of this adds up to nursing schools being exceptionally competitive!

Lack of professors WAS the case but now the problem is hiring freezes. Oh trust me, we do have a "nursing shortage" already and it will positively get worse but that doesn't mean that hospitals will be any more eager to fill those positions until their finances turn around. While elective surgeries (the BIG BUCKS) keep declining and people still delay medical care until disaster due to strained finances AND Medicare continues to reimburse less and less... we can only hope that the baby boomer drop-out will be the saving grace for new grads...just wait around for several more years. Who knows, maybe even a decade since people are delaying their retirement as well, you know.

I'm not the one who wrote the test or the requirements for admission.

And another problem is.......no experience? Then you have NO JOB either!

I applied to so many schools while I was in high school and didn't have the grades to get in to many, a lot of schools suggested I go to the community college and do all my pre-reqs, so I did just that and made presidents list with a gap of 3.5. Now they tell me I will have a hard time because a lot of schools only take a few transfer students. Does anyone know of some large nursing programs that DO take transfers with most or all the pre-reqs done? I know competition is tough but it is SO hard to get into nursing schools!!!

I feel your pain....I just graduated in December from RN and it was three long years of waiting to get in. Anything worthwhile is a tremendous amount of hard work and preserverance! You can do anything you put your mind to. If I can graduate at the top of my class with two young sons, a sometimes working husband, and living with my mother in law....it is possible. :)

Have you tried to apply for scholarships? I did and it helped me tremendously. The one I used was Work Source. They should be in every school. Free money for school and textbooks but the requirement for the fund is that you have to enroll at least half time and 3.0 GPA average.

so since I can't get a good TEAS score that means I will be stuck making minimum wage for the rest of my l ife

ALot of schools don't require the TEAS. another way to get in is to get a bachelors degree and then apply for the RN program. Believe it takes about 18 months, then you will have your BSN which I believe will be required nationwide in the next few years..good luck

Yes. If you think only way out of minimum wage is nursing.

There is no nursing shortage. There is no hard evidence that baby boomers not retiring, "Obamacare", a huge influx of aging baby boomers filling up hospitals shortly or any other wishful thinking notions people like to tell each other.

If anyone would like to share their source material for their belief about what may happen 10 or 20 years down the road I'd love to comment on it further. I don't want to discourage anyone. Nobody can tell how you as an individual will do in the job market. I do think it's really important for people to grasp the truth before they waste time or money based on an outdated prediction made by people who are loathe to be honest because they stand to lose something.
