Why are students stealing my food?!

Published

Earlier this week a student was in the office for bad behavior (I share an office with main office), I stepped out to find a student for their meds and I came back to realize the kid had gotten into my fridge and stole my orange. I was grumpy pants but got over it pretty quickly. Just upset the student was allowed into my office and gotten into the fridge and nobody said anything to him.

Today, I got a lunch from the cafteria and a student has to stay inside for recess. I step out in to the hallway and saw this student go into my office and take some food off my tray! Caught her red handed as she stuffed the food into her mouth.

Ugh dont mess with me and my food!

Ugh.

I had a 7th grade girl that caused so many problems in the clinic last year- faking asthma attacks, anxiety attacks, lying to come to the clinic...saying her mom was dying, she found her grandma dead on the stairs..tons of drama & counseling.

I really tried a lot of compassion with her and worked to get to the bottom of why she acted out the way she did but she was wildly obnoxious in every aspect of her life and it was so frustrating. But I felt like she was looking for someone to understand her so I kept giving her another chance and she kept taking advantage of me over and over. I always try to work with the motto, "kids who need love the most ask for it in the most unlovely ways"or something like that.

But finally I grew frustrated and she caught me on a bad day and happened to steal my diet lemonade from my clinic fridge. I wrote her up and that happened to be the last on a list of many offenses that were piling up for her in the principal's office. I felt pretty bad when she received a week's suspension that afternoon!

Okay, maybe not too bad after I spoke with the principal and found out all the trouble she'd caused in class, on social media, at home. And then he was flabbergasted finding out all I'd dealt with on the clinic side, too.

If nothing else, it helped me realize I'm not alone back there in my clinic and there is a need to share my concerns with him or homeroom teachers before they get out of hand.

Sorry, I didn't mean to write a novel there but you might think about letting these kids' teachers know if you think it's something that could be an ongoing problem since we nurses aren't typically ones to handle discipline issues.

If MY kid were inviting herself to the nurse's food at school (or the teacher's or anyone's) you'd better believe I'd want to know!!

I turned to get a student's medication out of the cabinet one day and when I turned back around he was sitting in my chair behind my desk with his face about 2 inches from my lunch! Me and that little 3rd grader had a little chit chat. Do not ever go behind my desk and sit in my chair! AND DON'T BREATH ON MY FOOD!!! Funny thing is, he is one of my favorites...just not that day :)

It happens very rarely but students have stole my food. Makes me angry. Makes me do a better job if locking up my phone too! I'm always feeding kids but I expect them to ask.

And I thought feeding wild life was bad but this is ridiculous :D it's your own fault for feeding the little buggers lol

I had no idea it was a thing either! It's never happened before and now twice in one week? im shocked.

I did embarrass them, one was almost in tears and then it made me feel bad. But really, keep your hands off my food!

I'm that way with my coffee. Touch my coffee and all hell will break loose. And I will use the residual ashes to rewarm my Mochachino.
