Why??? Sleep interrupted nocturia post 12hr shift...

Why is it that I can work an entire 12.5 hr night shift, not stop to pee ONCE, and then when I try to sleep during day, I wake up at least 3 times to pee?

Why can't I just come home and pee 1000mL, sleep 5/6hrs straight and then get up?

Crystal Light makes many flavors (just avoid the caffeinated varieties!) I used to make Kool Aid but not add sugar. My favorite is the sugar free Hawaiian Punch!

I will try that! Thanks! :)

Lol! Exactly!

Of course I use the proper terms when addressing my patients, but posting on a board about something that just frustrates me and that I was just venting about, I prefer to talk like I do among friends. :)

I just say "pee" for everyone. "Do you need to pee?" "How many times did you pee today?" I get up-close and personal with these people washing their hoo-ha's and doo-dah's and everything in between. I want them to feel comfortable with me and I feel like saying "urinate" would just make me sound....I don't know.....like they're just a room number and a name. Meh, that sound dumb but maybe you get my drift....

Now, I never, ever say "potty" or anything that could sound demeaning or childish.

Lol, I work as a school nurse - if I used urinate, those kids what just stare at me. I just say "when is the last time you peed?" The same with bowel movement. Though I say poop and the 17-year-old kids still giggle sometimes. (of course, so does my 31 year old husband...)

As for not peeing on a 12 hour shift...I don't work 12s, but I do have a very busy school day for 9 hours where I rarely get a few minutes to pee. However, if I drink any caffeine, no matter what time of day, I have to urinate ALL the time. Water, juice, etc. I can hold it forever it seems. I down my coffee right before the school day, use the restroom, and I'm good. After school, however, I feel like I have to pee every 15 minutes sometimes! I think my bladder is making up for lost opportunities...

When I was a new grad, I would never have said "pee". My nursing instructors would have gotten the vapors if they heard any of us say that word.

A few years later.... yeah, I think nothing of asking "do you need to pee?". Why not?

my first fundamentals clinical our CI made sure we understood that using the word pee was not acceptable - we could use "urinate" or "void" (which I don't know where void came from when I think of void I think of a black hole) but absolutely NOT pee!

Bump!

Hi everyone, although the thread is old, no solution has been provided. I'd appreciate an advice so much!

I do not drink anything but coffee, tea and water. I sleep during the day and don't drink more than 5 glasses of water because there's only so much time and I'm never thirsty. I urinate 8 times after I get home from work throughout the day and before I go to work. I rarely intake more than 3 glasses of fluid during my 8 hour shift and I urinate at work 2, sometimes 4 times.

I swear I'll get a shewee and bottles with me to confirm, but in total, I pee 6 times the amount I drink. I pee at 2 am, then at 5 am, then at 7, then at 8 am when I get home, then at 9 am before I go to bed, then I wake up to urinate at 11:30 again. Then at 13:00 and 4 more times before I head out at 22:00.

This only happens when I work night shifts. I never get up at night to use the toilet and I'm generally healthy.

How does one get the body not to need to urinate for 8 hours after one falls asleep during the night shift week? Please, need a solution! My period is now irregular because of lack of sleep. I go to bed at 8 or 9 am after a night shift, but I can't fall asleep after I wake up to pee, so there are days when I just curl up in my bed trying to fall asleep again! I do not drink, I only have one cup of black coffee to stay alert at work and I do not eat sugar.

Thank you for reading through this,

I usually drop the kids off at the pool when I make water. Saves a trip.
