Why do recruiters do this?

Published

Just need to vent. I got an email from a recruiter looking to set-up a phone interview(in response to a resume/application I submitted). I was agreeable to the day and time, moved some of my stuff around to make sure I had plenty of time, had my phone charged, resume in front of me, etc.

She emailed me to confirm, then when she actually called, asked me one, (one!!!) question about the distance I lived (I'm an hour away, do long commutes all the time). Then she said "well, I'll have to ask them if thats ok", and hung up.

Geez, couldn't she have just asked me that question in an email? its not the first time a recruiter has led me to believe it was an actual interview, and just asked one question. ok vent over.

Ugh. How annoying. I've never responded to online solicitations and your post confirms my concerns.

Just to clarify, this was for a company in my area and an application I submitted, not an online solicitation.

The recruiter was probably notified by management on the unit to verify how far your commute was, especially if there would be any required training. I work for a company than asked me why I would drive all the way to work for them and it was only 30 minutes. I found out from the unit manager that she liked to make sure that people didn't live too far away because they would spend a lot of resources training them and they usually left within a year for something closer to home. I found it silly before because I was driving over an hour/55 miles each way to where I was working when I attended the interview.

they never asked me. I live 43 miles. They just know that I live outside the range of the transport that will get you if weather is bad LOL

then they should have just called to clarify, not said it was an "interview" big difference between an interview and clarifying a question.

I usually have long commutes, 60 or 70 miles, its never been an issue, usually I'm just asked if I have reliable transportation. I just dont get why they called this an interview when it clearly wasn't.

where I live most people have long commutes, at least an hour each way.

I had a phone interview set up just for the lady to call and tell me that the job was filled and she didnt feel like training a new grad! Why not just email that!!

I have missed the call in response to an application. I called back in less than an hour only to be told she wasn't there. Called the next day and was told that it wasn't the right day for my application...and so on with wild excuses, until I was told the job was already filled a week later. My gut says the interviewer was holding the job for a friend and was able to count me (very much qualified) as not interested.

Specializes in tele, ICU, CVICU.

Length of one-way commute is a crucial requirement, depending on unit specialty or facility. Is there a on-call requirement?

My next thought is, the recruiter somehow didn't see your home address on application or resume. Not likely, but only human...
