Why are you REALLY going into nursing? Honest answers please.

Ok, I'm a bit frustrated with all of these posts telling us that we shouldn't go into nursing because we need a job and steady income. Sure, I do like to help people, but I need a steady job even more. So, I decided to post a poll to see if we can get some honest answers.

I've chosen this career path because I believe it is what I'm suppose to be doing. It's about care of others and giving. Sure, it's a potentially good income, however, I don't expect to die with a large bank account. For me, there's much more to our lives than just the "things" we acquire along the way.:Melody:

I want to be a nurse so I can prance around in the sexy outfit for my husband! Hey... do they make us wear white or nude hose with those micro-mini skirts? :lol2:

JK! But really, after much introspection and prayer over the last 5 years I've determined that nursing is right career choice for me. I thrive in dynamic environments, have always loved math and science, and I've always had deep empathy for others, even as a young child. Nursing=perfectly designed career for me!

  1. Everytime I walk into a hospital, I feel like I'm supposed to be working.
  2. My husband has high blood pressure and diabetes. He's 54. I want to make sure I can support us and take care of him, if I need to.
  3. I'm an artist. I love science - especially as it concerns the one thing we all possess, a human body. Think Da Vinci. (Not comparing myself! It's just a lot of us artists seem to have an affinity for science. It must be a gene thing.)
  4. I want a challenging job, with flexible hours and good pay.
  5. Nursing is a noble profession.
  6. I need to make a difference.

Another ex-IT drone here. I got sick of working 6 days a week, and then moving back in with mom when the company went belly-up. I decided I wasn't going to live the rest of my life like that. so...

#1 security

#2 ability to work at night...I'm so not a day person

#3 working 2 or 3 days a week as opposed to 6-7...for same pay! I want a family someday, and want to spend time with them.

I decided to get into nursing because i have heart for sick individuals. it hurts to know that i am healthy where as other people aren't. I can fend for myself but others who do not have that ability to do, its a heartbreaking thing to see. I have my health and they don't. My area of speciality will be pediatrics. luv kids and hate to see them sick, disabled, etc. i want to show them love and that they aren't any different then the next person (that goes to grown up patients too). I heard that nurses shouldn't get attached to their patients. How can you not? that is what makes the difference. It will show the individual that you truely do care for them. There are endless fields in nursing as well. My goal is to touch people's lives one at a time. Another reason is that once i start in the pediatric field as a nurse i hope to gain knowledge and experience so that i can one day become a pediatrician.

Honestly, since I was a child I wanted to be a nurse. My mother is an RN, all of her friends are RNs, my aunt's are nurses. It was just all around me. Growing up I was afraid that I couldn't do it, that I wouldn't be good at it. So, after high school I went into psychology and studied that for two years and decided to avoid the reality that I should become a nurse. Then fall of last year I went through a serious health scare that required surgery and after when I was in the recovery room my nurse was one of the greatest people I have ever met, I will never forget her kindness and her love for her job. She talked with me a lot about it and at that moment I was inspired.

The job security and money are absolutely appealing but I couldn't put myself through school and the emotional toll of it all just for that. No way.

However, I don't judge anybody for doing so. If that is the reason they become a nurse and they end up being a fantastic nurse and are happy, I say good for them.

Hey!!! you are then set. i mean you will have all the help around you to help you become a successful nurse.

I've been an LPN for 32 yrs and am now in school for my ADN. Why? Becaused I've watched enough RN's over the years to know that I can do that!! And I will get paid more and have more work options.

I'm becoming a nurse because I want to help people. It's just that simple. And that's the whole truth. :)

I have never seen myself in any other career besides Nursing. I love the fact of helping people and making a good life for myself(yes making good money) and being in a profession that is very looked up to.

In addition to really liking medicine and people I want to make some real money and only have to work a few days to get it. I started off as a Nursing major in college had a baby, dropped out and was working as an Executive Assistant and then a nail tech. The money was good but the long days were not. I know now what it means to LOVE a job and still have a family that you spend time with.

Heck I will admit it... Money, Money, Money!!!!

Oh and job security and continuing to work 3 12's (I am a data coordinator in a nursing department, so that is a perk I am already enjoying )

Ok, so if you weren't paid for that, would you still do it? Seriously.

I think that's an "all or nothing" stance. Why can't you love helping people and love the money that comes with it? You don't have to disregard your personal comfort and well being if you get pleasure out of caring for others.

To quote that cliche, you can't love others till you love yourself first.
