Why is it so hard to get A's?

Published

I'm trying so hard to get straight A's and it is so hard!! Like as of right now In my first semester of college I have 2 B's and 3 A's but it's not enough.

Just last week in my Organic Chem class, I failed my first quiz with a D+, but ever since then I have been studying so much in that class and it did pay off for me because I got a whooping 100% on my second quiz (Which put me at a B). But it's still not enough. I'm really good at English but I got a B- on my first paper and I just don't see myself getting good grades this semester. I also have an essay due weekly and I keep getting 90/100 on all of them, an then in my Anthropology class I can't seem to get a 100% on all of writing assignments either...

But I admit I spend hours a day on Netflix and it may be compromising my grades but if I don't have Netflix in my life it would just be all about school and nothing else. I mean if I can't have a social life then at least I have Netflix.

So how did you all get good grades and keep them?

And I'm guessing the "intro to orgo" class that you are taking that doesn't require gen chem 1&2 as a pre req is also a survey class and not the same as organic chemistry. I say this as someone who has a degree in chemistry and worked as a synthetic organic chemist prior nursing school. It's not the same. You can't get valid advice without being honest about what the class is. Calling a survey class organic chemistry is like calling intro to astronomy - astrophysics. Two different things. Two very different approaches to studying.

So, I guess now you will try to convince us that cosmology and cosmetology are different subjects as well?

Ummm....the Netflix?

You already pointed out what might be holding you back. It doesn't seem like you would have a hard time getting As if you just worked at it, as you demonstrated from the 100% you got on your second quiz. By the way, how are you in OChem already and it's your 1st semester of college? Just curious. Where I'm at, the first round of Gen Chem is required before getting into OChem (unless you finished that with AP credit in HS which, if that's the case, then this whole thing shouldn't be that big of an issue - except the Netflix!).

Also, it's your 1st semester of college. You're learning how this all works still. Just cancel the Netflix subscription and start it back up once you establish your winning routine. Reward yourself, don't indulge yourself.

My school actually had us taking Chem the first semester of freshmen year as well. It was a combination on general, organic, and biochemistry all in one semester course. It was so tough. My nursing program required us to get a 'B' or better to advance into A&P I. 😊

I don't know why people get so worked up here whenever someone is going to a school that does things differently than they are used to. Just because something is different from how your school did it, that doesn't mean it's impossible or inappropriate. My hospital diploma nursing program included a year of organic chemistry our first year of school with no prerequisites other than high school bio and chem. And we all did fine in the course (with a lot of effort, that is). And, yes, it was real organic chemistry with lab, the same course that the chemistry and pre-med majors at that university took (they were our classmates), not an "intro" or "survey" course.

Taking organic chemistry before gen chem is like taking calculus before algebra. It doesn't seem like the best way to set students up for success academically speaking if a school allows students to skip over a class like gen chem and straight into o chem. That is my personal opinion and nothing more.

I have always heard that an "A" student is a "B" student in nursing school. As for a social life, we were told at orientation to tell our friends and family goodbye for the next 2 years. We thought they were kidding, THEY WEREN'T!!!!!! I kinda forget what a social life actually is. I just keep telling myself it will be worth it in the end.

Simple but honest answer based on what you wrote... Some people have to put in more time than others to get same results. We all learn differently. If you need to study 16 hrs a day to get A's, do it until u get them. Practice some discipline or it will be tough in nursing school.

"Why is it so hard to get A's"......and then you say you spend time watching Netflix that you could be spending studying.

For some, it ISN'T hard to get A's, some have to work hard for them. YOU, it seems, have resorted to wondering why you aren't getting A's....while sitting in front of the television.

Answer seems self-evident, no?

I think that you are doing well in your first semester. You seem to have the study skills to improve when need be for example that quiz grade you got. I also believe in balance too. I am all for achieving with excellent grades and being studious, because it is important to maintain a good grade, but also to have a life besides JUST school. You'll get yourself in a tizzy overworking and studying all the time. Take care of yourself, find activities to help you relax and rewind, and stay studious with you classes. Decrease your viewing time on Netflix. I know personally it can be quite the distractor. ;)

Netflix is the other half.

Back off of Netflix. I watch it exclusively when dieting. (no food commercials)

Bro...it's never a good idea to skip a pre-req, even if it's not officially enforced or whatnot. You won't be able to keep up, trust me.
