I live in Chicago and have visited almost every part of Florida, I am actually going to be visiting Ft.Lauderdale at the end on January. I ask anyone here that has ever lived in Florida and they have nothing but terrible things to say. They tell me the schools and education systems are bad and that the majority of the population have low Iq's and are poor. I don't know why this is, everyone seemed pretty normal to me?? I would like to move there one day and start a new life with my husband but I'm worried about salary and job placement for both himself and I. Why are some peoples experiences so bad, its so beautiful and the people are very nice. I just don't get it. Can someone help me understand why this is??
I totally agree with you. I've lived in FL my whole life (born in S.Fla). It is so annoying to see people clump FL together as ONE "big-bad" state. It is soooo different from region to region. I went to school in Tallahassee and it is a totally different world than S.Fla. It's the real "south". If you're looking for a big city and metropolitan feel, go for the big city areas, West Palm, Ft. lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville. Just as with any other state, big cities offer big city problems.
Yeah! I sold my house and have 3 weeks left in Tampa Bay. I had a contract on my house within 4 days of listing it.
After 20 yrs of living here in Florida, I'm packing it all in and heading back to Canada.
3 solid years of nothing but bad news has been more than enough for me. I just don't see this state recovering from its economic gloom any time soon.
And check this out. I had applied for a full time day position at work. I was turned down, the job was given to a new grad at a lesser pay I'm sure.
I'm moving to a city where there is a new hospital opening next year and the LPNs work at full scope of practice in hospitals.
Florida is definitely NOT the only state that is going through its temporary crisis. A lot of people is moving to other states seeking a better job with pay, but soon realize its not much of a difference. I have been living in NY for the past ten years; once 9/11 hit NY, everything went upside down which caused a domino effect for the other states and country. Once Katrina hit, let's just say it was a done deal. The cost of living is very high in NY; we pay like 3-6 different taxes. If your an RN here making (for example) $80,000; its like making $40,OOO, literaly! I was working as a Social Worker making $47,000 and I could not barly survuve off that income because the cost of living is just depressing. There are a lot of nurses here that are out of work, looking for work, seeking a better pay and moving out of NY just to seek employment opportunities else where. A lot of hospitals has closed down along with LTC facilties. So Florida is definitely not the only one. As for the salary in FL; it just depends on where you live and experience because I personally know some nurses that are living and eatting well.
FL is not that bad. No matter where you are, your environment is what you make of it. Right now there aren't many jobs in Florida. The pay is low and benefits are being cut to the bone. Education is good, not as good as say Harvard but way cheaper. People are generally nicer down south. You need a automobile to get around. The biggest thing that got on my nerves though is that every thing closes after 6 generally down here. I'm from NYC and I'm use to every thing being open 24/7. But other than a few minor gripes Florida is ok. Lower taxes and real estate prices for one.
I have lived on Merritt Island for 2 yrs and absolutely love Fla! I am a native of Ohio where we paid city and state income tax and the water bill was twice what I pay now.
As far as education high school students have the opportunity to dual enroll in high school and a community college at no expense to the family, thank you state of Fla for picking up the tab for my child to participate for 3 yrs! There is also the choice of applying for a magnate school or private school you just have to make the effort!! And low iq..............no way. Residents of the space coast have anything but an average iq.
On the subject of the arts we have an active Playhouse in Cocoa as well as The King Center in Melbourne that offer a variety of plays, musicals and ballet performances. Once again you have to take advantage of the opportunities that are available.
I am fortunate enough to work for a hospital with competitive pay and have a community college as well as a branch of a university within 5 miles of my home and they offer the LPN, RN and BSN programs.
Florida is a diverse melting pot but provides new and exciting experiences and opportunities that are not available in other parts of the country. In short don't knock it until you have tried it!!!

Being from here since I was born but having lived in North Carolina and Alaska, I like florida. There is two florida's and really a third.
Ft. Lauderdale and South. This is not really florida anymore but more the capital of central america. It is a very diverse and liberal section of the state. The speed limit is 110mph although it maybe posted at 70.. people drive like crap and it has sections that are nothing but glitter and gold... Some like it.. some don't.. I enjoy visiting it.. Usually we'll put the speedboat in at west palm and either goto the bahamas or put in at ft lauderdale and goto the keys/Biscayne bay. Half the area moves on island time, half moves on this NY fast time.. Everyone down here rich or poor enjoys a good party. It does not ever freeze here. Your xmas tree will be a palm. The weather is beautiful. Hurricanes are overrated. No one in florida worries until the storm is a 3 or greater. The one and twos are reasons to go surfing and having friends over.
Tampa/Orlando
This is like tourist central. Tampa to me is just weird. I never could figure out the lure of it. ybor city is over rated. Orlando has some of the worst traffic ever short of atlanta. I4 is a parking lot several times a day. Orlando has every nitwit looking for a stupid mouse and an exit. Especially right now the snow birds are migrating. Newsflash if you're from canada. Don't ever get in the fast lane. You're not fast. Orlando is a very metropolitan city with plenty to do. It's pretty balanced. It's got everything from artsy crap to good hunting. It's still very commercial and no beach + stupid toll roads. You like oranges right? You will if a cold snap gets to the farmers. Miles of them.
North Florida/Jacksonville (where I live currently)
If miami is democrat central. Jacksonville is republican central. It doesn't really support any arts except the wonderful jacksonville symphony. The sheriffs don't tolerate crime (very much a shoot first because he was doing something stupid and by shoot we mean 42 rounds) and it's a make your own way navy town. It'll freeze maybe 7 nights a year. The leaves change though(late november) unlike down south. Much slower than miami.
Tallahassee/Panama City
Great country out there. Older and conservative section of the state. Mostly influcences from LA, AL, GA.
Things that are different than most other states:
Florida has semi lax gun laws, and a very strong castle doctrine. Alot of people are armed. If you're from a serious blue state that may offend your sensibilities.
We drive fast, no you really don't.
Property Taxes vary by county. Realize that there maybe reasons everyone lives on the other side of the street.
Utilities vary by county. In jacksonville, on one side you could have JEA and on the other have clay electric coop. clay elec is about $150/cheaper per month.
No state income tax.
If you don't support americas military, don't come here. There's a base of some sort about every 50 miles. There are 5 in Jacksonville.
The shuttle. (everyone should see at least one shuttle launch, I saw many of them when you could be 5 miles away on base)
Send your kids to private school, it's a better education anyways.
IF you're from up north, You must acknowledge how the SEC is vastly superior to the BIG 10. If you don't know what this means then you will be removed from the state.
College football is a religion. Some are followers of the bobby bowden, some are of the urban meyer, the church of nick sayben and steve spurier are always recruiting.
If you like hunting and fishing, this is your state.
I'd say you can live on half the cash on the north end of the state as you can on the southern end.
