Why did you become a nurse?

Hey, Brian. I became a nurse to "help" people in a hands on manner and have a career that I would always be challenged in and be forever learning. Many careers "help" people, but most fields in nursing require hands on care and no case is ever the same and there will always be updates and better ways of providing care, so it's a learning process. Plus, this is a career field that is its own little world, so the possibilities are endless. :up:

I wanted a stable job doing work that was interesting and that also had some element of personal satisfaction.

After 3 years of paying my dues, I've pretty much found what I was looking for. The personal satisfaction varies from patient to patient but I find that there are at least a couple every shift and sometimes several. There are usually a few turkeys, as well ;-)

I wanted a job that had set hours, and when I am not there I did not have to think about it, or be on call 24 hrs a day. I work 2 days a week and can support myself, and have health insurance, plus my work is interesting.

I wanted a job that had set hours, and when I am not there I did not have to think about it.

I wish I would have known this my first 6 months, maybe I wouldn't have woken up at 3 in the morning wondering if I remembered to do this or that.

It took me a while to figure out someone else was there caring for the patient and that it was going to be all right. I could hang up my super hero cape and go back to sleep.

Glad that you like that. Eyeballs are creepy to me. I could never work in eye surgery.

It was a course that offer me the chance to be with other people and be a part of a team that can help people get better.

When I was a sophomore in high school, my appendix ruptured and I had emergency surgery. They kept me in the hospital for 7 days and my nurses were wonderful. Before I could be discharged, they had to teach my mom how to change my dressings. Well, my mom couldn't stomach that, but I wasn't bothered by it & told the nurse I could do it myself. So, she showed me, then said I should consider nusing because I'd make a great nurse someday! That, was my first plug toward nursing. Shortly after high school, I married. I had 2 children and both times, I loved my nurses. I ran an in-home daycare for years, and told my husband (now ex) that I wanted to go to school to be a nurse. He constantly told me I couldn't do it and he wouldn't stand for it. (he was abusive and controlling) So, 5 years after my divorce...I am now a new grad LPN & am pre-RN. Yay!
