Why don't they allow people to bring their pets?

Published

I have heard that they are trying to get people to leave New orleans but the people won't go because they don't want to abandon their pets. Why don't they let the people bring their pets with them? :crying2:

I would not go if they would not allow me to take my pets.

I'd be gone in a New York minute - my kids and my husband and me. As far away as possible whatever way I could.

I'd let the dog loose. The cat already is an outside cat and I'd be hardpressed to catch her anyway.

I've had animals all my life and I've loved my animals but I wouldn't chose to stay behind in a disaster because I couldn't take them.

thank goodness someone else feels this way too! I was thinking maybe I was just very unfeeling and had no clue. I guess i just wasn't raised with the idea that pets are as important as people. (I do love my pets past and present, but if it's me or them, they gotta fend for themselves). Now my 4 yr old who is completely in love with her bunny "Topsy" might not agree! :)

I spent my childhood hanging out at the local pet store totally fascinated with all of the animals. :) I went berry-picking with my Dad when I was a kid and he had a rifle and raised it ready to shoot "Bambi" I screamed "No Daddy" and I jumped in front of his gun and said "Don't hurt Bambi." Fortunately, I didn't get shot but my Dad was sure mad at me. :chuckle

I would never had made it in life without my cats. The joy that they have brought into my life is priceless. :)

I don't think you are Steph are unfeeling at all. I wouldn't put my dog's survival above another person's either, but since I don't have any kids it's just me and him. I could not leave him to slowly die. I just couldn't and since I would be the only person affected by my choice, I figure it's ok to make that choice. My dog is my baby. The national guard better come packing if they ever try to separate us...

I'd pack up my pets, too. I can understand why people don't want to leave their houses, when they can't take pets to the shelters. Did anyone else see the story on NBC about a woman whose 2 year old was handed to someone on a bus, then she was knocked down and the bus left for Texas? She also had a teenager who was alternately pushing or carrying a storage tub with a good size dog in it. I'm sure that they would have had to abandon the dog to get on the bus. I read that she found her baby 2 days later, but I wonder about the dog!

I have heard that all the animals that have been evacuated are being microchipped. Good idea, much better than euthanasia.

At least the evacuees have a chance of getting their pets back, as they are being fed and housed for an extended length of time.

Unfortunately, our shelter is not "no kill". They do encourage spay and neuter, but don't have room or finances to keep up with the numbers of critters. Tonight I found a kitten in a shopping center parking lot. It's dirty, hungry, maybe 8 or 9 weeks old, female. Also I thinks it's blind or has very poor vision in one eye. Chances of survival at the shelter are slim to none. She's a determined little creature, persisted in jumping up until she got to the bathroom counter. Now she's in a crate for the night.

Anybody want a kitten? We have our quota, but I couldn't leave this little one drinking dirty water from a drain. Hopefully I'll find a home for her.

Mimi2RN. Thanks for saving that kitten :kiss I hope you will be able to find her a good home. Best of luck.

That kitty is lucky to find someone like you to rescue her.

I have been trying to talk my fiance into another cat for quite some time now with no luck. I'll eventually wear him down, but he may make me wait until we get our house.

:p
