Who loves it??????

Nurses General Nursing

I get so depressed sometimes reading this stuff. Soooooo many nurses hate their jobs. I work in construction management. Cut-throat, demeaning, nasty, ect..... more than you could imagine. I want a new career. Nursing seems like it would be a great fit, but I keep hearing all of the complaints. It is really getting me down and second guessing my thoughts of going to nursing school.

So,,,,,,,, who loves their jobs? Speak up to those of us considering this profession. Thank you.:o

Specializes in ICU, ER.

ER for three years. Love my job, great co-workers, great pay and benefits.

People will complain without being asked. Sometimes you really have to push people to say something positive. Sad!

Yes, indeed nursing is stressful, but I really like my job. I like helping people, especially those who are vulnerable. I also like the financial reward and job security in nursing.

Specializes in Trauma, Teaching.

26 years worth: done med-surg, oncology, step-down, LTC, camp nurse, volunteered overseas, now 10 years worth of ER. Can't see myself in any other profession. Working on my masters so I can teach if I want to later.

People who go in with unreal expectations are the ones that end up "hating" it the most. There is one person shadowing a doctor here, isn't even a med student yet, but getting a real eyeful of what ERs are really like.

If you aren't really sure what nursing is all about, I'd suggest finding a hospital that will let you follow a few people around and get a good feel for it. Good luck! and hopefully welcome to our ranks!

Specializes in Post Anesthesia.

I've turned into one of the "I hate nursing" crowd but there was a time when I would have worked for free. The only reason I took vacation was for my family- I would rather stayed at work. I worked with a great group of nurses under a director that really cared about quality care. The hospital was nurse friendly and the docs treated the nursing staff with professional respect. It lasted about 5 years and it has been all down hill from there. New management, new docs, new staff. If you can find your nitche nursing can be a wonderful job. Now Im just biding my time till pension but I do believe there is hope that not every nursing job is torture- I've seen how good it can be.

Specializes in med surg, oncology, outpt and hospice.

I love my career!!!:nurse: I would not rather be anything else than a nurse. I have been a nurse for 11 years and I love it. I do not always love my job but I do love being a nurse!!!!!:heartbeat:redpinkhe:1luvu::redbeathe

i love my job. i burned out from the er but rather than leave the profession, i found another job within it in home health.

keep in mind that many of the negative posts here are just vents. we can't vent anywhere else for different reasons, and we come here because most of the people here understand what we're feeling.

Specializes in Ortho Rehab, LTC, Med-Surg, Telemetry.

I've been a nurse for 4 years and absolutely LOVE being a nurse. I haven't always loved my job, but that's a pretty easy fix with as high in demand as nurses are. If you find yourself in a job that doesn't suit you, there are always many more out there in many different fields.

As others have said, sometimes what appears to be a negative post is really just a nurse venting who's had a bad day and nowhere else to vent.

Nursing is definately a challenge, but it's a profession where you go home at the end of the day knowing that you have made a difference. Nothing can top that feeling.

Specializes in Travel Nursing, ICU, tele, etc.

The best things about nursing: (IMHO)

1) You have "permission" to keep trying positions until you find your niche. I had 6 different nursing jobs in about 2 years and never did I get turned down for employment because of it. It is an accepted part of the nursing culture.

2) There are never ending opportunities for new challenges and learning.

3) We are generally treated very well by our employers. Being an 'in demand' field gives us a lot of benefits unknown by other career paths.

4) Personally, for me, being able to wear scrubs is a HUGE advantage. It is a relatively cheap way to dress for one's career compared to the corporate world, for instance.

5) I can move anywhere and find a job.

6) Occasionally you really do have deep satisfaction in your work, and directly impact the quality of people's lives.

Now, to be balanced in my analysis of nursing, I will have to tell you that I did go through a sort of a honeymoon period, followed by a time where I really dreaded going to work. But, I slowly developed an appreciation for the field and am now deeply satisfied in my work.

To me nursing is like life itself. You are confronted with the human condition smack-dab in your face, day after day, all the ugliness and all the beauty, all the suffering and all the joy....(and all the body fluids you can think of!-- hehe!) So I look at nursing like I look at life itself, is it difficult sometimes? (yes!) Is it worth it? (absolutely!)

So go forth, informed, step forth proudly...will you love it and hate it? (yes and yes) But is it worth every sweaty, tired to the bone, achy muscle minute? You better believe it is!!

Specializes in ICU, SDU, OR, RR, Ortho, Hospice RN.

I love my career and only EVER wanted to be a nurse from a tiny tot on.

I love the autonomy, I love the choices.

Nursing is a very mobile work force. You can work ANY where your heart leads you.

I have found my niche in nursing and it has only taken me 30 years of working in many areas. Gaining knowledge and leaving knowing I did good in that area LOL.

Hospice has given me the chance to 'be myself' I have great Autonomy with my clients and families.

I work for a truly awesome organization that I am blessed in knowing.

We have a 'family' atmosphere and care about each other. We offer help to each other. Ensure each other is taking care of themselves when we know they have had a rough time.

Nursing like any profession is what you make out of it. You can either feed off negativity or like me, choose to walk away from it.

If you follow your heart then it is the right decision for you.

I wish you well in what ever you choose to do. :)

Thank you all for the great replies. I really appreciate it. I am going to fill out my application for NS this evening.
