Who else is taking/has taken Microbiology??

Hi all!

Anyone out there taking Micro this quarter?? I am and so far its pretty hard! Thought we could start a thread about our micro experiences...I had my first test today and it was soo hard over 80 questions.....ugh...we had to grow some smelly bacteria this week too....My instructor is not very good at lecturing and forgets to actually lecture then she just expects you to know it....how am i supposed to know what hemolysis is if you dont tell me! ANyway, here is a good link for micro...it has some awesome quizzes and online notecards...http://www.mhhe.com/talaro5

We can make this thread for anything to do with Micro! Where is everyone from and where are you taking micro and for what program??

Assuming it's a prerequisite for your RN program, will you need to retake Micro if you fail? Will they still accept you if you fail it now? I've been accepted into a program on the condition that I finish my prereqs by the end of summer ... with grades on par with what I have been making ... which means A's. It's a bit of stress!

if i dont pass micro this spring *crosses fingers* i have until the end of the first semester to complete it or else i cant continue on. so that means this summer and next fall i have to have it completed w/ a C or higher. i was worried about this too so i talked to the nursing counselor as soon as i got my acceptance letter. good luck w/ your prereques!

Yahoo I passed!!! I was scared to death our final had 200 questions on it. I just got my final grade a B! Suits me fine. It's finally over, thanks for the well wishes. crb

woo hoo! congrats, i bet you are glad that class is over!!!! what ever happened to your awful teacher did anyone report him for that awful sexually harrassing comment?:) :balloons:

One more test in Micro, one more test in Micro!!! Yay! I'm a little excited to be done, can you tell? I need about a 55% on this test to keep my "A". I'm sorry, germs, but I'm not gonna miss ya. I've learned 101 ways to get diarrhea...No, I'm not questioning the usefulness of this class; I'm just glad it's over.

I took micro a couple years ago, and LOVED it. We used the Tortora Microbiology textbook (which came with a free access code to a kick-butt companion website named microbiologyplace.com). Of course, yourse truly was on the cheap, so I borrowed the textbook from the college library and paid $18 to subscribe to the website (The book cost over $100 new so I saved a bundle!):) If you use the tools on that website to study you can pass both the lecture and the lab with a good grade, even if you're not doing so hot in the class right now. It has excellent teaching animations, quizzes, practice exams, flash cards, research links, image banks...just about everything to explain the material so that anybody can understand it.

I wish my library kept the book...i aced my first test but i have another one coming up this week so keeping my fingers crossed...my micro book is published by the same publishers as my AP book and they both have great websites that are free..ie dont need a code or anything, the AP one is actually alot better but anyway i hate micro lol i LOVE AP!:)

I am good at the lecture tests. I got a 82 on my first test and realized that I need to not only study what he talks about but general stuff from the book. he doesn't really test on the nitty gritty unless he talked about it but I noticed that some things were more general things just from the book and that screws a lot of people I think. So on my second test I got an 98 and on my last test (I took on Friday) I got a 90. So am I very good standing for the final. I will definitely get a B and maybe an A if I work hard at studying.

The lab is another story. Our lab and lecture are completely seperate classes managed by two different professors who don't really talk to each other. The one for the lab is a witch! Who doesn't teach anymore (TA's teach the classes) and only writes the tests and quizzes. Sense she is SO out of tune with students' needs she writes terrible tests. I have a C!!!! I do well on the lab reports and doing the labs but the written tests are horrible! I feel like she practically wants us to memorize the lab manual!!!!

If get an A in lecture that will balance out a C in lab I hope.

our lab is taught by the same teacher as our lecture....shes not the most wonderful teacher as she just reads directly from her powerpoint slides which is just like reading strait out of the book...i can read the book! she doesnt really explain things! the last test i got a 91% but I was lucky! over half of the class failed...the worst thing was the test was SUPPOSED to be over chap 1 and 3...too bad quite a few of the questions were in ch 4..when i confronted her about the questions her response was "yes I agree with you those would ha ve been better on the next test.." and that was it, i kept staring at her expecting her to say something else, but no...oh well i cant complain since quite a few people failed...our lab is pretty easy, we have 1 lab to turn in a week and they are worth 15 pts each, next week we have a "lab test" but i'm not sure exactly what all that will entail...her tests are pretty nit picky....ah well...its def. the teacher that makes the class..too bad we have such a shortage of good ones....my teacher is set to retire right after our class is over so im sure that has something to do with it...

We're using this text - I am so glad to read your post. Do you remember if you used the 7th edition or 8th? I'm guessing 7th, since you said a couple years ago. The 7th edition text has a white cover with blue and the 8th edition has a black cover with yellow. We're supposed to use the 8th but I asked my teacher if the 7th would suffice and she said yes I got it for $30 from half.com shipped - the 8th edition was minimum $100 :uhoh3: Glad to hear the website was useful.

ok so who was it that said they were a master at making gram slides?? I need help! no matter what I do my organisms dont stain right or they 'explode' or something, what is the secret?? my teacher says gram staining is more of an art than anything i guess im just not that talented...have our second test thursday...ughhh...

I finished pre reqs 2 weeks ago and of all the classes we had to take, Micro was probably my most hated and most loved class! Our instructor gave nothing except essay tests for lecture and lab, so you REALLY had to know your stuff. I don't know my exact score, but I did get an A (although, it was probably by the hair of my chiny-chin-chin!) The key to success for me was 1.) Lots and Lots of note cards! I would write detailed explainations on the back and the person/word/bacteria/disease/etc. on the other side. Then my husband would read the subject and I would have to explain out loud exactly what it was. I found once I repeatedly explained it, it was no problem to answer and essay ? about it!

2.) Pre-read....if you know what your instuctor is going to lecture on before you hear it, chances are you are going to pay closer attention because the vocab and topics are familiar to you.

3.) Don't over do notes...if you are writing too much, you are listening too little! Our instuctor recommended at the beginning of the semester to pay attention to him, that is where the information for the tests come from. I recorded every lecture.

4.) LAB, LAB, LAB! If you get an A in lab, you can get a C in lecture (where there is WAY more information) and still get a decent grade for the class!

Anyway, If you pre-read, tape the lecture and just listen in class and draw pictures that the instructor does, take your notes from your recording and participate ALWAYS in lab, this class is no problem at all!

Good Luck All! :yeah:

I had a great experience with Microbiology last semester. My teacher was THE BEST!!! She was very helpful, and even gave us typed outline of her lecture content. She was very knowledgable, too...She used to be a Med. Tech, has worked for the CDC, etc. I knew I would like Micro, but I had no idea that I would love it as much as I do. Labs were taught by her, too. We had an "epidemic," did blood typing, all kinds of fun things. Heck, I even liked learning about the different types of media. :uhoh3: My husband thinks I'm crazy.

I loved staining, too....gram staining, acid-fast staining, endospore staining...etc etc
