How many hours per week do you study?
Oh honey...this will not work for Med/Surg!!!!! This is one CRAZY class! Seems like all I do is study, work, study, go to class, study, go to clinicals, study, sleep for 10 minutes, study some more! Better get to it before this class. There are many, many people in my class who made great grades before this semester and now are failing. There is a lot of info to cover, and what you have done in the past to study may not work any longer. I have studied four different ways (through 5 exams) and still have a very low B average. Hopefully, the newest way (reading outloud, then reading and taking notes, then doing and reviewing the objectives) will make an improvement on my test score...but the silly thing isn't posted yet! Good luck in whatever you do.

what treatment do patients who present with migraines......
As a nursing student and a migraine sufferer (Hmmm...could those be related?) I appreciate ANYTHING they give me to make the pain go away! I always self medicate and try to get it under control first!!! Mostly because I don't want to sit in an ER where it is loud and VERY VERY bright! It really burns me though, because if I do go to the ER I am looked at as a "drug-seeker". I have NKDA and do not request specific meds, just please, please, please make the pain stop! I can't stand it anymore. I have thrown up every pill I've taken in the last 2 hrs because the pain is causing N/V! Sorry..i know this was not really the topic of the thread... Just wanted to remind all...it sometimes doesn't matter what you give the pt....if they truely have a migraine they will be grateful that you made them better! (I do understand that some things don't work for some people...but when they can only take certain narcs, hmmmm?) But, just because I came in c/o severe pain and N/V...that doesn't mean I am one of those people!!!!!!

Math calculations test next week, HELP ME!
Hope you are getting this in time. Just another way to do the same problems, I found this ways is easier and you can do it with any problem you have! #1 100ml x 10 gtt/ml 15 min Divide 100 over 15 then multiply the answer by 10. This gives you 66.66 = 67gtt/min #2 50,000U : 500ml :: 1100U/hr : xml do this like any proportion, multiply the middle numbers together... 500x1100=550,000 then mulliply the outer two numbers together 50,000 x X = 50,000x so your problem lookes like this 550,000=50,000x now isolate your variable (x) by dividing 550,000 = x 50,000 x = 11ml/hr #3 500mL : 500mg :: 50mL/hr : x mg do the same as above, the two inner, the two outer 500x50=25,000 500 x X = 500x 25,000 = 500x 25,000 = x 500 x= 50mg/hour

I start nursing school tomorrow and I am scared!
brooke0428 registered user join date: dec 2005 posts: 6 re: i start nursing school tomorrow and i am scared! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- this is such a great thread!! i don't start until the 17th but i have orientation on the 9th and i'm even nervous about that!!! pretty silly i know! i've worked so hard to get to this point and now that i've finally made it i'm scared to death! i mean i am beyond thrilled but at the same time i'm really nervous. especially about clinicals.. i can't wait to work with patients but at the same time it's the thing i'm the most afraid of. i don't want to hurt anyone and i know shots, ivs, catheters, etc don't feel good. i just want to be successful and i know i will be but i think the unknown about what's to come is what makes me nervous! oh well it's good to see i'm not the only one feeling this way! good luck to all of you!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- just a word of advise before you go to your orientation...that is the most overwhelming thing you have ever seen!!! i actually saw people leave in tears the first day of nursing school...but by the end of the first semester we had only lost 8 people, most of them dropped either before the semester started, or early in the semester due to outside conflicts. but, just know that after you get your mind wrapped around all of the things that are expected of you and start doing it, you won't falter. it may not seem doable that first day, but trust me it is. everything just seems to start falling in place and you don't even stress about it anymore, it's just something you do. and remember...if it was easy, everybody would do it! good luck to all that are beginning first semester!

HELP!! Need ideas for Teaching presentation
This is my first semester in NS so it is my fundamentals clinical. We can do anything related to nursing, nursing school, or adult med/surg. They are very flexible as long as it relates to nursing somehow. My original idea was pressure ulcers, and since my clinical instructor loves chocolate I figured i could make small round cakes (the size that serve like 4 people each) and decorate the top of each as a stage of breakdown. All I would have to do is mix up some different icings and boom, instant teaching presentation. Well, a couple of days later we had clinical orientation and another instructor shared with the class that a former student had make lemon cupcakes (her fav) and decorated them to represent the stages of pressure ulcers! I could not believe it!!!!! :angryfire Now I am stuck finding a new idea because I obviously cannot do that anymore!!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

HELP!! Need ideas for Teaching presentation
I have to submit my idea for my teaching presentation this week at clinical. Our grades are either 8, 9, or 10 and in order to get a 10 you must really "wow" the instructors. Most of this comes from the creativity of your project. Well, I knew what I wanted to do, but then one of the instructors told a story of an previous student who did the same thing Now I am lost! I don't feel like I can do the project now without looking like I just took the idea from her, (although I had this idea before she told the story). I REALLY need help coming up with an idea that I can do a creative teaching presentation on! Any help would be appreciated!

Do I ask to leave class early?
My dev. psych class always let out early anyway....and as long as you are doing the work and getting the grade you desire, you instructor should have no problem with it. I would def. make sure to mention it to her though, that you plan to leave a little early each class. And remember, you are paying for this education, they cannot hold you against your will!!!LOL! I actually don't see that you even need to explain WHERE you are going, just that you must be out of class, say by 4:30p in order to meet other committments, but that you are going to put forth all the effort required by the course.

Add to the story....
...am as normal as ANYONE who works in the ER! But then they told me...

Ivy Tech Question
I am beginning the ASN @ IvyTech in Indy on Aug. 22. The first time I applied I had 56 points and did not get in. I reapplied the following year with 68 and did get in. The first year I applied, I heard that the lowest score was 57 so I was almost there, but now I am thankful that I didn't get in because it gave me more time to prepare myself and my family, save money, and relax! Plus I would have had to take summer classes to finish my pre-reqs and I would not have had any time off until graduation, this way, I had last summer, this summer, and next summer off! Way less stressful! Good Luck getting accepted!!!

Share Your Saying
Here are a few of my favorite sayings: Well, this day was a total waste of make-up! I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it left. Therapy is expensive. Popping bubble-wrap is cheap. You choose. Why don't you try practicing random acts of intelligence and senseless acts of self-control? Sarcasm is just one more service I offer. Stress is what you have when you wake up screaming and you realize you haven't gone to sleep yet. I work 45 hours a week to be this poor. Wait...I'm trying to imagine you with a personality. Chaos, panic, and disorder....my work here is done. Earth is full. Go home.

How much of a time commitment??
I am beginning my 1st semester in August and my schedule looks like this: Monday: 11-3 Fundamentals Theory Monday: 3:30-5:30 Pharmacotheraputics Tuesday: 8-12 Skills Lab Tuesday: 12:30-5 Skills Check off (30 min. each, won't know when until Aug) Wednesday: Study at home, no classes Thursday: Clinical 6:45a - 3:45p Friday - Sunday: no classes, study, grocery shop, study, cook for week, study, do laundry, study, family time (I am married with 4 children), study some more, clean up house, and study til cows come home! Since I only have to go to school/clinical 3 days per week, I am hoping that I have plenty of time to get all of my housework done and see my family and still have lots of study time at home. I do think that with one child it is very doable since I managed to do very well in all my pre-reqs and I was working full time. Now I am quitting my job (Aug. 11 is my LAST DAY!! ) to concentrate on school. Luckily, we have managed to cut our bills in half and put quite a bit of money in savings to prepare for losing my income. I know this is not possible for all students, but I do feel ever thankful that I could come up with a solution so that I didn't have to work!

No She/he Did Not!!!

What will YOU do with your first "real" paycheck!?
Right now I have my family on a STRICT budget! I am trying to put back ALL of the money I am making this summer (working for the state) :innerconf But by the time I quit August 11 :Melody: :balloons: I will have enough money to get us through 1st AND 2nd semester and I won't have to worry about working. It is really hard right now, but I will so appreciate it when I have too much work to do for school that I can't fathom having even a parttime job. Anyway...back to the topic at hand. We are going to continue to live this way after I graduate so that we can pay the the 30-40K in student loans off and put up extra money to buy a nice new house!!!!! I can't hardly wait! Right now I get excited every week when I transfer over my savings money. I just love to watch that account grow. It seems that all the sacrafices are worth it.

I just want to apologize to you Bevi....I reread this post this morning and that is NOT how I meant that to sound! How about this.... Bevi, no need to correct yourself! We get enough grades that we shouldn't have to worry about mistakes here!!! :) Again, I am sorry for how that must have sounded to you! Jen
