Who else is taking/has taken Microbiology??

Published

Hi all!

Anyone out there taking Micro this quarter?? I am and so far its pretty hard! Thought we could start a thread about our micro experiences...I had my first test today and it was soo hard over 80 questions.....ugh...we had to grow some smelly bacteria this week too....My instructor is not very good at lecturing and forgets to actually lecture then she just expects you to know it....how am i supposed to know what hemolysis is if you dont tell me! ANyway, here is a good link for micro...it has some awesome quizzes and online notecards...http://www.mhhe.com/talaro5

We can make this thread for anything to do with Micro! Where is everyone from and where are you taking micro and for what program??

We were doing throat swabs & he told this girl..... I know you women can open your mouth wider than that, if it's something you want in there!!!

Wow. I am in shock. That is sexual harrassment if I've ever heard it! :angryfire

I took Micro last fall and loved it! It really helps to have a good teacher who loves the subject and can make it interesting. My favorite part was the lab, finding out our "unknown" bacteria (ours was E. coli). My least favorite part: having to write a group research paper (ours was on Bacillus anthracis) and do a group paper on our unknown.

On my unknown every test matched E. coli so naturally I picked E. coli. When I got mine back it was marked wrong & I got 60% as my grade. When I talked to him he said, different companies that make the medium have their own chart you must go by, so this chart may have been by a different company & there is no way you could have correctly interperted your results!!! HUH??? & I asked the nut then why am I being graded on something I could not have possibly gotten right?? His response, well let me take them all back up & look them over again. How in pete's sake can you learn like this? I am telling you he is NUTS! There was 1 person that passed the lab & they made a lucky guess.I will be so glad when this circus of a class is over.

Second, no joke, if were one of those ladies you better bet I would have been in the deans office reporting him for sexual harrassment!! That is completely and totally inappropriate...How can you learn anything in a setting like that? Im grateful now that atleast my teacher is nice and willing to help, that is if she remembers!! We just finished our second week of class so I am hoping that I will like it more when we really start getting into things...Lucky for me in my class we dont have to do any research papers or anything soo thats always a plus! Good luck all! keep us posted!!!

Thank you! We went to our director of nsg & she went slick off!! She got all of our grades at midterm before he was talked to & told us to let her know if he made it hard on us. I know this all sounds crazy but it's the truth, I could go on & on. I hope I can pass even if I do badly on the final. I have a high B so........ my fingers are crossed & I am counting the days till its over! I will let you know how I do regardless I will not be in his class ever again.

hi im new to the board and im taking micro this quarter...its ok...we have a midterm on monday!! cant wait till summer quarter!

Sorry to hear of everyone's troubles with micro instructors. I was lucky enough to have a terrific one and I loved the class. He was very knowledgeable, clear and organized, and did a fantastic job of presenting the material. The guy even included funny microbiology-related Simpsons clips into his PowerPoints (you'd be surprised how many there are!)

I took it and I loved it. I took Micro years ago at the U of N from a Prof Ickenberry. He was great.

I found I had a "talent" for Gram staining! :rotfl:

Got interested in research because of it....

no anatomy with that physiology? lol :)

Nooo *shaking head*

My school likes to draw out the torture! :chuckle

We did anatomy this spring, and we are doing physiology over the summer. They feel that they are able to go further in-depth... But I think they're just crazy... we're like the only college in the universe that teaches them separately!!

You'll know your stuff Katydid.... But it kinds does sound like a money scam.

The only time I heard of this is at a 4 -year and it was an Upper level Bio class...

You sure you ain't taken Physio with them nerdy pre-meds, lol????? :p

No, but I might as well be!! I'm actually in a 5-semester ADN program at a school of nursing.. (My school just merged with a 4year university, but they have not merged our programs, so we are all nursing people on my campus.) All my classes are with nursing students. Which is great! Talk about becoming one big ol' family!!

Anyway, yes I know my stuff... Last semester in anatomy they had us get down to the nitty gritty... from learning the structures inside the ovaries down to every trochanter/fossa, WHATEVER on each of the bones... If it's on the human or the cat you can pretty much be sure we studied it!! :chuckle

Thank god for Clairol, because I'm sure that Anatomy gave me more than a couple gray hairs! ... and this is why I'm soooo not looking forward to physio & micro!!

lucky for me our anatomy class is combined with physiology...but the memorization is hard!! although i do find anatomy far more interesting the micro...but then again i am only going into my third week! Hopefully we get our first exam back on monday....last week in lab we grew different bacteria and go figure i dug my loop so far into the agar i had to start over, lol its going to be a long quarter...
