Who can challenge the NCLEX-PN?

I have heard army medics/corpsman can challenge the NCLEX-PN, and MAs absolutely cannot challenge it, what about a RN student half-way through their program? Who all can challenge the NCLEX_PN?

Thanks:nurse:

It varies from state to state.

You can't challenge part way through a program. You would need to finish and graduate first.

Only certain states. CA and I believe VA. And theres certain prerequisites to meet.

Some programs allow a PN challenge after your first year of an ADN (Ive heard here on Allnurses), but it varies state to state. I would first ask your school, OP b/c they would probably know. Your state BON is probably the best source though.

Some states may allow challenge, but it would be near impossible to get a job in another state without proof of attending an accredited nursing program.

In Calif you must have a certain amount of hours in the required subjects as well as a certain amount of time in clinical. To challenge, review the Calif LVN website and determine which option is open to you. There are a few. Fill out the papterwork, have your school fill in what is necessary and have them return the paperwork to you. You then finalize everything, submit what is necessary, etc. When you are authorized you arrange for a testing date.

in MA after a certain amount of nursing school you can sit for the exam but you have to show proof that you have withdrawn from you RN program you cannot take the exam while still enrolled in an rn program just to make more money of whatever the motive might be also if you are in an asn program you will be about 75% done when you would be eligable to sit for the boards so you might as well finish

That is only for some states.

There are particular programs that structure their curriculum so that the first year of instruction meets all of the requirements to sit for the NCLEX-PN and upon completion of the second year, one meets the requirements to sit for the NCLEX-RN. An example is Columbia Basin College in WA state (http://columbiabasin.edu/home/index.asp?page=656)

I knew of a couple people in a bachelors degree program who challenged the LVN exam after 3 semester, or maybe 4 I cant remember.

In Florida 1st year students of a RN can challenge for the LVN
