What do you prefer to wear at work? Please elaborate if you have a strong opinion.
I just graduated from LPN school in June and began working at a hospital that requires nurses to wear white. I would prefer to be able to wear colors other than white all the time, even though I think nurses look very professional in white. I haven't yet had problems keeping my whites bright--but it is early in my career. :nuke: The one benefit I have heard of is patients being able to distinguish who is the nurse and who is not since so many healthcare workers wear scrubs nowadays. Sometimes you may ask a patient who was in their room and they have no idea--they may call anyone in scrubs "the nurse".
I love my patterns and colors. And I am a bit superstitious too, if I had a bad night in certain scrubs, it is really hard for me to wear them again!! I know if I wear my scrub top with angels on them, I will have a very good night. I save them for nights when I am feeling a bit insecure!! I love scrubs that make people smile. Where else in life can grown adults wear some of the fun scrubs out there, like cartoon characters or other great prints. Scrubs, to me, are one of the very best things about being a nurse!! I love scrubs. :lol2:
When I worked on a hospital unit I almost never wore white. Unless you never touch a patient there is a big chance that you are going to get something on you and any stain on white just jumps out and says "Hi look at me! Can you see me? Can you see me? Hi! I'm here!" I CAN"T STAND THAT! Who wants to go into their pt's room with coffee stains on their white scrubs and say "hi Im your professional, educated nurse, who can't even get a cup to my lips without spilling it, are you ready for that injection?" I'd much rather camoflage that. Wouldn't you? Now that I work outpatient drug treatment we wear street clothes so we don't seem like an authority figure to our patients (go figure).
I answered "any color, including white", but I'm one of the minority that really LIKES white. Maybe I've been lucky, but I've yet to get something visible on my white pants....and I give myself an extra look see in the mirror each morning to make sure my panty line isn't offensive (??wondering just what is so offensive about it anyway??)
What I'd love to hear is anybody's opinion of capri scrub pants??
I am in what appears to be a minority- I LOVE whites whether it be scrubs or an actual "uniform" top. I grew up in a family of nurses (Gram, Mom, Aunts on both sides)...and White was what they wore to work. Gram is with the angels now; Mom is retired. However, my aunt and her sister still wear white every work day AND they wear their CAPS!!!
I do have several white uniforms and scrub sets...I do also wear other colors and prints at times. I must say that I do get a different reception from co-workers and patients when I wear white...people really still do like to see nurses in white. I also feel differently when I am in all white---I feel proud to carry on a tradition that goes back many years in my family...yup, I do feel differently in white than in other colors.
p.s. I wore my royal blue the other night and spilled some of my supper---looked just as bad on royal blue as it would have on white!
I am a true believer in all colors including white! I was so thankful that when I started in nursing school that we did not have to wear all white, we wore an army green pant and lab coat with a white top which was FANTASTIC! I occasionally wear a white top but have retired the bottoms. Let me just say that it was an unfortunate event! Anyway to everyone rock on in what ever color scrub you do the best job in!

Personally I like colors and whites but wear very little white on the job. Our Uniforms are furnished by our hospital and now they are leaning again to us nurses wearing white. Other workers will be color coded too. It is hard for patients to distinguish who really a nurse though. Everybody now wears whatever colors they want including the clerks.
